We’ll review the rights and responsibilities of all parties as well as what to anticipate with logistical and resource challenges after a hurricane.

Collaboration and diplomacy can be the best tools after a major catastrophe. Remember, when contractors, parts, supplies and resources are limited to you, they are also limited to insurance providers. The clock starts ticking on both sides as soon as a claim is filed; we have to think outside the box. Speaking of ‘box’, the concept that there is a ‘hurricane box’ in the Caribbean or that there is a ‘hurricane hole’ is not an idea that underwriters or reinsurance companies are operating under. Insurance is a two-sided contract; understanding if there has been a breach of contract on either side might speed up your decisions. The warrantees in marine insurance are not only spelled out in your policy; the policy connects to the application paperwork you completed at inception including the application with your summer and winter location (not just the navigation box), your declared Named Storm location and/or Hurricane Haul Out arrangements, your formal Storm Plan details, an Absentee Owner questionnaire with Caretaker details, Survey details and/or your Letter of Compliance (with Surveyor Recommendations).
