Welcome to the team Tom!
Recently, we welcomed Tom Stuck as our newest staff member here at Lilac Wellness and Counseling. He previously worked at Kaiser Permanente as a clinical supervisor for alcohol and drug services for 22 years before retiring in 2008, for the first time. After realizing that he needs for fulfillment than just being in fun activities, he returned to Kaiser Permanente as an on-call substance abuse counselor for 10 years before retiring for a second time in May 2018. Now he is doing private practice here at our clinic, which he looks forward to as “a new adventure”. He works on a cash-pay basis only, $75 per session. Sliding scale pricing are available for those who are on a financial aid basis.
Tom has lived in Salem, Oregon for the last 32+years; born and raised in Cincinnati, he graduated from University of Cincinnati with a masters in counseling. His hobbies including: windsurfing, paddle boarding, traveling, and much more. He’s happily married for the last 21 years, living with the love of their life… their dog, Razzle Dazzle. 🐶💓
MAGNESIUM is such an important mineral to the brain as a part of almost every part of the stress response, recovery, and repair. We receive Mg mostly from plants, for a long time it was not accepted that food could have any influence on brain structure or its function including cognitive, mood and intellectual development. There is evidence that serious deficits in dietary Mg are related to an increased risk for major depression (MD). Magnesium has been demonstrated to be a rapidly effective intervention for depression, likely related to its role in regulating neuronal function through calcium flux in and out of cells, and potentially its role in optimal thyroid function—an under-active thyroid is a known cause of depression.
Dietary magnesium intake has steadily declined over the preceding century, due to: a) the practice of refining grain to make processed foods and b) making dietary choices low in magnesium-rich foods. Over the years bio-available Mg consumption has decreased from 450 mg to 250 mg per day or less, resulting in significant and unhealthy Mg deficiency in the majority of the population. Magnesium supplementation is both inexpensive and pretty safe. Those who prefer not to supplement can be encouraged to add nuts, seeds, and dark chocolate (a palatable and healthy prescription).

Active male patient wanting to try acupuncture for the first time and loved it.
A great recent study found that those who suffer from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may find pain relief from acupuncture! Amazingly, the research from Harvard University is showing acupuncture has the potential to remap the brain and improve functionality and symptoms such as pain, numbness, and tingling. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can cause the slowdown of nerve impulses to the brain, and acupuncture can help brain cells to respond to touch signals in the fingers. Improvements in symptoms and functionality from acupuncture treatment may also be long lasting.

Study shows differences in effects of ‘real’ and ‘sham’ acupuncture Researchers saw improvement in carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms after “real” acupuncture and brain remapping. The study also found no physiologic improvements from “sham” acupuncture.
