Did you know that humans didn’t struggle with crooked teeth until agriculture came into the picture? It was the shift away from hunting/gathering and towards farming and eating softer foods that lessened our reliance on chewing. This made our jaws shorter and wider over time, with less room for teeth.

Prepare for emergencies this winter by making sure your car is prepared for winter weather. When temperatures drop to below freezing, try to keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up and to make sure you have plenty of fuel in your car in case of emergencies.

We see a lot of smiles here at the Lab - some of which we like to call "restorations gone wrong."

This patient came to us with ill-fitting dentures - you'll notice that she can't properly close her mouth, her top lip is stretched and nearly invisible, and the unnatural positioning is creating a pronounced double chin effect...all in all...these teeth were not cutting it.

One of our talented ceramists went chairside - assessed the fit - and performed a complete reset of both the upper and lower dentures. This required stripping off the teeth placed in the original set and resetting teeth that were a better fit physically AND aesthetically. The finished product - a truly restored and beautiful smile, complete with two lips and one chin!

When she left the office, she sent us a message, saying "my teeth look beautiful!!! Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate all of the care and attention you put in to making them for me."

Teyden Ysasaga was hired at the beginning of this year as a driver - but quickly found a seat on the floor, learning how to be a technician.

Teyden still drives cases up and down Interstate 5, Monday thru Friday - in his downtime, he assists with the lab's workload and gains new competencies, under the tutelage of our advanced technicians.

While we can all agree that developing your workforce (especially those in the skilled trades!) has always been critical - these times are unprecedented. Teyden is an ever-evolving asset here at PDR - and a shining example of what happens when you commit to growing your employees’ skills - and teach them a trade.

Hats off to this all-star high school athlete turn(ing!) Dental Technician. We are excited to watch what he does next.

Another one of our denture tech superstars, Mariah Porras - utilizing a high powered scope on this more than usually complex removable component case.

Mariah comes to us with several years of prior dental lab and dental assisting experience, with knowledge and a skill base that allows her to fill in across departments as needed.

Denture technicians - also called "removable technicians" - are a rapidly expanding group - the career is expected to grow 11% and produce 9,100 job opportunities across the U.S. between 2018 and 2028. The national median income of an experienced technician can be as much as $32.00 an hour!

We are excited to be part of this industry's growth, attracting skilled and competent candidates like Mariah as we continue our commitment to providing excellent service, every time.

Meet Mahaylee, a former dental assistant turned denture technician hired at the lab at the beginning of this year, and one of this Friday's featured employees. Denture technicians fabricate dental prosthetics to make dentures, crowns, and bridges using plastics, ceramics, metals, and other materials.

This job requires excellent attention to detail and manual dexterity - Mahaylee is often seen, case in hand, with her headphones in and her head down, completely immersed in her work.

PDR's denture department is staffed with formally educated technicians that understand complex tooth morphology as they factor in all the indicated specifications on a prescription. Add to this their experience sitting chair side, and you can rest assured that at PDR, we are your partners in achieving client satisfaction!

The Model Room is the first stop after we receive patient impressions in the lab, where technician Tim Bowman then examines them for quality and accuracy before getting to work making the model .

To do this job, Tim must be able to properly utilize and conserve lab resources as he completes plaster casting, die trimming, and sand blasting - his is the noisiest work area, without a doubt! He expertly uses various types of hand tools and equipment, like drills, presses, lathes, and high heat furnaces.

From pour to polish, Tim moves seamlessly through his work area with the highest degree of efficiency, experience, and judgment. Since 2016, he has been a prime example of what happens when a person with an expert eye finds a trade, puts in his earplugs, and builds skills organically, with the lab as their classroom.

Caro is seen here applying her expertise to staining and glazing - an essential step in assuring that a restoration matches its owner perfectly. A native of Germany, Caro started her lab career at age ten, under the tutelage of her late father, a master level ceramist. Following his death, she attended Haltern Am See, a technical school where she became certified in dental technology, and then headed to America.

Caro's last position before joining us three years ago was in Los Angeles, where she provided chairside aesthetic consultation to celebrities needing dental restoration. The standards there were big screen high - and those standards are the ones we employ as we painstakingly curate your patient's new smile.

Josh Fowler, seen here scanning in a case with Straumann Cares software, has been with Precision Dental Restoration since 2018.

Josh began as a Lab Technician, and through mentorship and professional development advanced to Scan and Design- and now, he is the lab’s Assistant Surgical Guide Designer.

PDR has a long history of in-house training that began with founder Marv Staggs and continues on to this day. We are strongly committed to internal professional development - building technician proficiency and promoting from within!

Today’s technician spotlight shines on Adria Mann, a Ceramist with the second longest tenure in her department( 12 years this year!).
