Did you know that our board member and group facilitator, Anne Giffins, is Ms. Wheelchair Oregon?! She just got back from the Ms. Wheelchair 2025 competition. Anne wrote the following to share out with her ABLE family.
Thanks for continuing to share your experiences and cheer for others, Anne! You are an integral part of our community!
---
It’s the week dreams are only made of! The Ms. Wheelchair 2025 competition! The slumber party filled ladies on their wheels, coming together for the greater good of empowering other people’s lives! A weeklong journey filled with workshops, laughter, empowerment, dinners to dress up in costumes, and one crowning event to Ms. America!
Our first visit was to the Merijer Gardens where we did a scavenger hunt to locate the garden’s finest attractions of artwork and their own beautiful flowers, and a huge photo of class of 2024 Ms. Wheelchair.
Workshops are there to educate us all on our platforms, to give us ideas to encourage us to be safe and keep a well-balanced life. The week designed to pack all they could in for all of us to have a great time, educate us, and to have a good time!
The tables are always filled with small gifts: wheelchair Lego’s, crown pins, earrings, and much, much more. There were 3 dinners to dress up! Disney, under the sea, and a favorite decade. We all dressed to impress! I decided to wear a pink full mermaid outfit, 1800’s floral dress, and Minnie Mouse! Every dinner was remarkable the fun, the laughs, the excitement, and the joy this impacted us with I’m sure with last our whole life, I know it will me!
I was in awe at the beauty every lady has, their determination, and their heart for their personal journey along with their platform! They all had a life which brought them to advocacy for themselves. As our wheelchair doesn’t define us but our journey to serve others does! I got to see their own vision of seriousness and the huge impact on their states.
My heart will always be in that week. Not every day of my life will I have anywhere near 21 plus woman in wheelchairs in any given day! They have all impacted my life, my journey, my platform and who I am and I am more grateful than I’ve ever been.

Over this past weekend, we had approximately twenty students from Willamette University donate time and resources to help clean up and beautify our Salem campus! In a few short hours, they were able to mulch around the whole property, re-tarp our ramp, re-line our parking lot, and more. We appreciate their hard work and dedication to our community and look forward to working more with them in the future!
