Thank you for such a great start to the school year. We are doing our best to keep everyone safe and to keep things flowing smoothly. Thank you to everyone for trying to stay as kind as possible as we work together to get off to a good start.
Please know we are short three support positions, two paraprofessionals and a lunch aide position between 11:00 – 1:20 two days a week. If you know anyone who may be interested, have them call the school office for more information. Both coordinate well with the times students are in school.
Our morning routine is evolving and here is where we are at:
• We have staff on the playground to monitor students starting at 7:50.
• The doors open at 8:00 for students who want to have breakfast. Please remind your child to come in at 8:00 if they want to eat.
• At 8:10, everyone comes into the building to go to their classrooms.
• Due to Covid concerns, we are not allowing adults into the building. Please check in with Sherri in the office through the front doors if you have questions or concerns.
The LPA (Longfellow Parent’s Association) will host an Ice Cream Social this Thursday starting at 4:10 pm. Parents or a responsible adult with the child must be present for the child to receive a desert.
Coffee with the Principal will be on Thursday morning at 8:30. Please bring your own hot drinks and there will be muffins provided. It’s a chance for discussion, ideas and questions.

Longfellow Meet and Greet will be Friday, the 13th of August (tomorrow) from 8:00 – Noon and 1:00 – 3:00. It is a chance for parents to bring their child in to meet your teacher and set up their place in the classroom. Adults are required to wear a mask to come into the building.
Our practice at Longfellow Elementary will be to strongly encourage mask wearing for all of our students, much the same as last year. They are not mandatory. We were successful staying in person with our students most of last year and based on recommendations for public health and our experience last year, we are going to try very hard to develop a culture of mask wearing to keep all of our students as safe as possible. To that end we would like to also ask for students to wear masks tomorrow and to start Monday morning with a mask if the parents choose to accept that guideline. I understand there are strong opinions on both side of this situation and I trust we can find a way to work this out as best we can.
The Federal government is once again providing free breakfasts and lunches to all students to start the year. That should continue for at least the first half of the year. Here is the morning routine to start the school day, starting Monday morning.
• Students can be dropped off at school at 7:45. We will not have playground supervision prior to that time, so please don’t drop off a child prior to 7:45.
• There will be a first bell at 8:00 for students who want to come into the building for breakfast in their classroom.
• There will be a second bell at 8:10 for everyone to come in off the playground to go to their classroom to start the day.
• After 8:10, please use the front doors to the school to enter the building. The East and West entrances to the building will not be staffed.
• Breakfast will not be provided after 8:15. If you would like for your student to have breakfast, they must be coming into the school by 8:15 to receive a breakfast.
• If a student is not in the building by 8:20, they are tardy. Judge Murphy has asked us to refer any student with regular tardies to Truancy Court.
I am excited to start the new school year and to have our wonderful students back in the school building. And it is safe to say the whole staff is very excited as well.

We are ready and excited to start the new school year for 2021-22!

With good wishes to each of you and your families, here is some information for you to be ready to start the new school year at Longfellow Elementary.

First of all, thank you to everyone in the Longfellow Educational Community and the Salida community for the wonderfully cooperative effort that was made to provide as much in person education to our students as possible. It was a very challenging year for us all and we all contributed to a very successful educational year for our children. Congratulations!
Some important dates to note:

The school office is now open. Come by or call 530-5260 for information on how to register a new student or get your questions answered.

Friday, August 6, 3:30 p.m. - Class lists that show what classroom your child will be in will be posted on the front doors of the school.

Friday, August 13 - Meet and Greet day where parents and students can come to school between 8:00 – Noon and 1:00 – 3:00 to meet their teacher and get set in their classroom.

Monday, August 16th - The First day of school! School starts at 8:15 and ends at 3:50.

Thursday, August 19th at 6:00 - Parent Orientation for anyone who is interested, especially Kindergarten and other parents new to the school. There will be information provided by the school nurse, school counselor and the principal and there will be time for discussion and questions. Pizza will be served and child care will be available. Our Parent Teacher group, the Longfellow Parent Association (LPA) will be present to share information on how to get involved to support students and the school.

Thursday, August 26th - Coffee with the Principal at 8:30 am, starting right after drop off. It is a chance to present ideas, ask questions and have a discussion about our school.
