Windows July security updates send PCs into BitLocker recovery Microsoft warned that some Windows devices will boot into BitLocker recovery after installing the July 2024 Windows security updates.

We've tried to get the word out about cyber scams/fraud, but it is still happening, including the incident below of a Salina resident.

So I'd like to task all of you with helping your friends and family not fall for this or something similar.

Helpful tips on avoiding scams

1. Don't trust any email or link, even if it seems like it is coming from a friend, family, or reputable source. Scammers have gotten very good about sending legitimate looking emails.
2. No legitimate company (Microsoft, Cox, Norton, Social Security , etc.) would EVER ask for any payment in the form of Bitcoin (or other crypto) or gift cards.
3. Unlike credit card fraud, if you buy crypto or gift cards and give the information to the scammer, you will NOT get any money back from the bank, credit card companies, or anyone else. These are considered legitimate transactions and therefore you are just out the money.
4. On your computer, you are most likely logged in as an admin, this means if a scammer gets on your computer they and immediately start installing software which looks for all your personal information as well as the ability to do other nefarious installations. If you create a separate admin account and make your every day account a standard user this will help dramatically if a scammer should get on your PC.
5. Turn on MFA/2FA on all your banks, credit cards, emails, and all important accounts, including social media. This one item can prevent more than 90% of cyber attacks.
6. If anyone calls you and makes you feel "afraid" or "scared", it's a scam, hang up and call someone you trust to verify.
7. When searching for things on the Internet, avoid "Sponsored" links as these are often scams as well.
8. If you need help with anyonof this, please reach out to JAB IT or other trusted friend/family.

Microsoft will be ending support of Windows 10 on Oct. 14th, 2025. Anything before Windows 10 (Windows XP, 7, 8, etc.) is already out of support and at serious risk.

The main difference between this end of life and previous sunsets is that Windows 11 has a hardware requirement that most computers built prior to the end of 2018 will not be able to meet.

Some 40% of PCs in use (more than 400 million PCs worldwide) will be unable to upgrade to Windows 11 (due to the hardware requirements and TPM), which means when Microsoft stops providing security updates for Windows 10 in Oct. of 2025, those computers will risk security breaches if they continue to be used.

So don't wait until next year to start planning for this upgrade. JAB IT can provide you with an equipment audit and assist with developing a plan to get your devices upgraded to Windows 11 or replaced.
