Independent book store proudly located in the heart of historic downtown Salisbury for over 20 years
We sell new books with a focus on North Carolina, literary fiction, children's books and new releases.
I was lucky to take a lightning fast trip to DC this week with other amazing booksellers (I met two IDOLS - Dominique with Paperbacks and Frybread Co. and Arlan with City Books - follow them on TikTok and witness all the goodness bookselling brings to this Earth).
Our fantastic trade association - the American Booksellers Association - occasionally points us towards ways to use our collective voices to better the playing field for small American businesses and their customers. This week, we met with Hill staff as they focus on details relating to the Credit Card Competition Act.
I don't want to bore you to tears here, but every small transaction you have in which you are asked for cash or a debit card instead of a credit card - we were raising awareness over that. Credit cards don't compete when setting transaction fees, and we firmly believe competition is a vital facet of the American economy.
Small businesses typically pay over 4% of their revenue to credit card companies off the top - and booksellers usually have a "good" year if we get to keep 2% of our earnings at the end of a fiscal year.
If this legislation passes, you probably won't lose your rewards program, and a couple thousand small businesses might survive in 2025 that wouldn't otherwise. It would be such a small thing for our 29 largest banks (plus one credit union) to agree to, but it would positively impact nearly every consumer in this country by giving them more security and competition amongst an industry that remains unregulated in deeply troubling ways post-2008.
Should you ever want to contact your representatives over this, or any other reasons - here's how to find them: https://www.congress.gov/members/find-your-member
Hope you are all safe and dry this evening! And that life brings you into the bookstore soon β€οΈ
We are going to respect Ms. Helene and see how the day progresses tomorrow - stay safe and dry, friends!

"Let's go to that dreamy blue bookstore in Salisbury."
Artist: Irisol Gonzalez Art
For those wondering - "Why'd you paint your entrance bright blue?" - some context.
A. Downtown Salisbury, NC will undergo a massive streetscape project after Cheerwine Festival next year. The goal of the project is to make our downtown more walkable and inviting to pedestrians - and I fully support this vision. When it is done, we will all benefit from gorgeous new lighting, landscaping, and sidewalks.
But the getting there will be so HARD, y'all! Check out this video of our friend's front door at nearby Goldberry Books on Union St. in Concord (and then immediately drive over and show them some love)! For periods of time, customers will have a hard time actually using our front door to shop with us during construction.
So, I wanted us to be easy to spot from the corner and have folks know we are the bookstore. I'm pretty sure we stand out now :)
B. Irisol Gonzalez Art was in town, and she can paint anything I own any color she wants - I trust her vision, and love her dearly.
Hope you love the change as much as I do! -- Alissa
Another amazing Irisol Gonzalez Art project is nearly complete in our space - we can't wait for you to see it!

Amazing.
At only 4' 8" tall, Simone Biles' jump clears more than 7 ft of air. Or, in library terms, she could jump over roughly 65 James Patterson books. π€ΈββοΈ π π

Our Story
by Alissa M. Redmond, owner
I've gotten a lot of probing questions regarding my decision to leave the U.S. Foreign Service to move to Salisbury in December 2019, and I thought I would jot down some less personal answers here, as I want to convert as many of you, dear readers, into residents of - or at least frequent visitors to - this charming town. There is so much to offer here, and - as I've lived here for approximately a minute and a half - hereβs my expert plug for the greatest little town Iβve found on the east coast so far.
Salisbury is geographically located in the center of my universe, as a preacherβs daughter from eastern N.C. with close relatives scattered from Savannah, GA to Williamsburg, VA and beyond. It's located directly off a few exits of I-85 - about a 40 minute drive to either Charlotte or Winston-Salem, and it's dead center between a drive from Washington DC to Atlanta. If you time it right, you can fly to New Orleans for $50 each way from the airport in Concord - to say nothing of the flight possibilities from CLT.
Salisbury is home to two universities (Catawba and Livingstone), a community college, seminary, AMAZING symphony, several live theaters (my 4-year-old daughter wants to be in the Children's Theater's production of Frozen next summer...), and a vibrant arts district. There are multiple opportunities to be involved in philanthropy here, including via the regional headquarters of Lutheran Services. Salisbury is the birthplace of Food Lion, Cheerwine, Elizabeth Dole, and Zion Williamson.
