This month, Jakey Sala Siolo has come in to curate our community shelf for Utah's Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with some of his favorites!

About Jakey Sala Siolo
Jakey is a Q***r Samoan who is passionate about community work and hopes to make waves of change for their Pasifika community, and all communities, here in Utah. As a descendant of Oceania their activism is rooted in intersectionality, indigenous rights and land back. About I Hear the Sunspot
Because of a hearing disability, Kohei is often misunderstood and has trouble integrating into life on campus, so he learns to keep his distance. That is until he meets the outspoken and cheerful Taichi. He tells Kohei that his hearing loss is not his fault. Taichi's words cut through Kohei's usual defense mechanisms and open his heart. About Somewhere Beyond the Sea
Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. In the tradition of Legends & Lattes, comes a cozy fantasy steeped in sapphic romance about one of the Queen’s private guards and a powerful mage who want to open a bookshop and live happily ever after…if only the world would let them.

All Reyna and Kianthe want is to open a bookshop that serves tea. Worn wooden floors, plants on every table, firelight drifting between the rafters… all complemented by love and good company. About the Community Curated Shelf

Each month, an individual, organization, or business curates a q***r bookshelf here at UTU with 5% of the proceeds going to a LGBTQIA+ person or org. January’s partner is ACLU Utah and their Transgender Rights Strategist, Nick Arteaga. The recipient is Burning Sissy Valley, a local QTIBIPOC collective (check them out !).

As the Transgender Rights Strategist for ACLU Utah, Nick Arteaga’s work focuses on defeating anti-trans bills, strengthening relationships with trans-led organizations and community, and building community engagement on transgender issues. ACLU Utah operates through public education, legal action, and legislative and community advocacy to enhance and defend the civil rights and freedoms of everyone living in or visiting Utah. It is an inclusive, nonpartisan, statewide organization powered by its members, donors, and volunteers.

Stan Clawson from Art Access is back to recommend a book from this month’s community curated shelf! Stan recommends The Future Is Disabled by Leah Laksmi Piepzna-Samarasinha. The book is written by a disabled femme of color who discusses the pandemic and living in a world that isn’t interested in protecting disabled folks. It offers encouragement to disabled folks and also discusses mutual aid and disabled joy in the face of isolation and discrimination.

Stan says, “I was moved by the author’s discussions of joy and disability, the notion that these two ideas can and do co-exist.”

Don’t forget, 5% of proceeds from this month’s community curated shelf will be donated to At Access’ work supporting the creative endeavors of disabled artists! This month’s shelf features disabled authors and and books that discuss disability justice.
