The best place to start any genealogy research project is to talk with your family members. Find out from the oldest living generation who is in any existing photos, or get them to talk about their parents and aunts and uncles. If you can, get audio and/or video recordings that you can revisit and share with your family.
If you run into any brick walls, need help translating languages, or understanding DNA test results, we’re here to help!
As each generation evolves, there is knowledge both gained and lost. Often we feel a nostalgia to learn what our ancestors once knew. What skills or knowledge do you wish you still possessed that your ancestors could have taught you?
Happy Independence Day to all of our U.S. friends and family! We hope you're celebrating and telling stories that will inspire generations to come!
If you have German-speaking ancestors, chances are you have encountered old German handwriting (alternate names include Gothic, Kurrent, or Sütterlin) or Fraktur (blackletter) in your research—whether in records from German enclaves in the United States, such as Pennsylvania, or records in Central or Eastern Europe.
A full page of script can look like proverbial chicken scratch and stymie research. With a little time and effort, however, you can learn to read Gothic script or Fraktur, whether you are fluent in German or not.

The Normandy invasion was one of the great turning points of twentieth-century history, when the Allies of World War II came together in the largest amphibious invasion in military history. The bravery of soldiers, sailors, and airmen of Allied forces led to the defeat of German N**i forces. On May 7, 1945, German General Alfred Jodl signed an unconditional surrender at Reims, France.
Today, we honor all of those who fought and sacrificed their lives and family members. Do you have family members who were part of this mission? What stories are recorded or need to be told?
