I feel smug in yoga class, but is hypermobility a blessing or a curse? Simone Biles and Michael Phelps are among those with excessively mobile joints. But will this leave them prone to pain and falls in older age? Not if they stay strong and active, research suggests

HOW TO PRACTICE PARIVRTTA ARDHA CHANDRASANA
1. Gather your props: a Yoga Mat and Yoga Block. If you are tall, you might want to use a 5-Inch Big Foam Yoga Block.
2. Place a Yoga Block on its tallest setting on the floor a foot or so in front of you and toward the left side of your mat. You can adjust the distance and the height once you move into the pose.
3. Stand in Tadasana (Mountain Pose) at one end of your mat.
4. Place your hands on your pelvic rim.
5. Shift your weight onto your right leg.
6. Lift your left leg up behind you, allowing your torso to tip forward until it is parallel to the floor.
7. Place your left hand on your block, and begin rotating your torso to the right. Keep your right hand on your hip.
8. If your torso is fully twisted to the right, you can raise your right arm up toward the ceiling. If your torso is even slightly facing the floor, keep your hand on your hip.
9. Take 3 to 5 deep breaths in the pose.
10. Turn your torso back to face the floor, then lift back up to Tadasana.
11. Repeat on your other side.

Forward bends are some of yoga’s most common, and iconic, poses. You can practice forward bends from standing, sitting or even lying down.
Forward bends promote lengthening in the muscles of the back, hips and hamstrings. Keeping muscles of the back, hips and hamstrings supple can also be healthy for your spine.
Relaxed muscles in the hips and hamstrings help you maintain your spine’s natural “S” curves. Tight hamstrings can position the pelvis so that the tailbone is tucked under, a recipe for lumbar disc problems down the road.
Practicing seated forward bends with a Yoga Bolster can help promote a healthy spine and calm mind.

Which meditation cushion is right for you?
• Zafus are the traditional, round meditation cushion. At about five inches high, Zafus will be more than sufficient for comfortable sitting for most people.
• Zen Cushions are similar in height to Zafus, but rectangular and wider in shape. Whether you choose the Zafu or Zen is a matter of personal preference.
• The V-Shaped Cushion slants downward to support your entire leg and encourages your pelvis to tilt forward.
• A Zabuton is a wide, rectangular, cotton-filled pillow. Placing a Zabuton under your meditation cushion or bench provides comfort under your ankle bones, feet, or knees.

An advanced yogi is one who has a two-way communication with his/her body—speaking and listening. An advanced yogi has the experience to know when he/she is too exhausted, injured or fragile to practice a particular pose. An advanced yogi’s ego is in check enough to know that what your body can or can’t do is not a measure of your commitment to yoga. The mature yoga practitioner knows that just because you can do a particular pose doesn’t mean that you should.
Advanced Yogi: It’s Not What You Think | Hugger Mugger Yoga What is an advanced yogi? Here’s a hint: it’s not necessarily the person whose body can achieve all the fancy poses.

SI joint issues are some of the most common injuries related to yoga practice. There are several reasons for this:
First, there’s the anatomically nonsensical “square your hips” instruction in standing poses that so many of us have learned and practiced for years.
Then there’s the emphasis on “hip opening” in so many yoga classes. Of course, it’s a good idea to maintain hip joint flexibility, but practicing extreme hip-opening poses without balancing it with hip-strengthening poses can destabilize the SI joint.
Try this SI joint reset pose:
SI Joint Reset: Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose | Hugger Mugger Yoga Products SI joint dysfunction may be the most common yoga-related injury. But yoga has a solution, an SI joint reset, in the form of Viparita Karani.
Have you ever tried a yoga towel? They’re a must have for hot and sweaty yogis. 🥵

They are machine-washable and antimicrobial, too.

How to Practice Bridge Pose with a Yoga Bolster
Supported Bridge Pose combines the benefits of backbending with those of Restorative Yoga.
While active backbends are generally stimulating, Supported Bridge is actually relaxing. When your head is below your heart and your neck is flexed, it triggers a process called the ”baroreflex.”
In a nutshell, the baroreflex suppresses the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) side of the autonomic nervous system and shifts you to the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) side.
1. Lie on your yoga mat with your bolster close by. Place your arms close in to your sides.
2. Bend your elbows and press your upper arms into your mat to help you arch your ribcage up.
3. Straighten your arms out alongside your body, and then press your feet down into the floor. As you plant your feet, stretch your knees out away from your pelvis to lift your hips.
4. Place your yoga bolster crosswise under your pelvis—not your low back. It should be positioned under the sacroiliac (SI) joint.
5. If your knees are uncomfortable, feel free to place a yoga block between your knees and squeeze your knees into the yoga block. For this, you’d want to use the narrowest dimension of the block.
6. Relax your neck, throat and jaw, as well as your facial muscles. Breathe deeply. You can stay here for as little as a minute or two or longer—up to 15 to 20 minutes—if it’s comfortable.
7. To leave the pose, lift your hips off the bolster. Slide the bolster out from under your pelvis and set it aside. Extend your arms out overhead and slowly roll your spine down onto the floor.
8. Stay here for several breaths, allowing your back body to soften into your mat.
