From the Unit Chief TCU Nick C***i
On this Patriot Day, we reflect on the sacrifice given by almost 3,000 civilians, firefighters, and law enforcement officers 22 years ago. Our reflection in the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit goes deeper, as we also recognize that tomorrow marks the 19th anniversary of the Tuolumne Incident, a vegetation fire resulting in the tragic loss of one of our finest, Eva Marie Schicke. Tomorrow has a special meaning for all of us in TCU. Continuing with our tradition in the Unit, we will honor the memory of Eva by observing a moment of silence on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.
I also ask that you take a moment to remember Stanislaus National Forest employee/retiree Allen Johnson who we lost in 2021. Allen was a friend and mentor to many and was also the Incident Commander of the Tuolumne Incident. I had the privilege along with several TCU Chief Officers, to participate in the Tuolumne Fire Staff Ride in May of 2021. Allen was a key person in the Staff Ride and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to have him share his wisdom and knowledge with those who attended.
In the afternoon, the following memorial procedure will be followed at all CAL FIRE TCU facilities:
At 13:44 hours the ECC will tone out all facilities in TCU and advise to fly flags at half-staff for one minute in memory of the sacrifice of our fallen firefighter, Eva Schicke.
All facilities will fly flags for one minute at half-staff, then return them to full staff.
Although tomorrow is the anniversary of this tragic event, let us always honor Evaâs memory. From her memorial marker, âEach day we can honor her by living our lives the way she did, with determination, kindness and a passion for life.â
Never Forget,
CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit will be assisting San Andreas Fire Protection District with a hazardous fuel reduction burn near the intersection of Mountain Ranch Road and Calaveras Road in the community of San Andreas, California on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 beginning at 8:00 a.m.
