Healthy eating habits lead to healthy teeth! Raw carrots, apple slices, and natural Greek yogurt are tasty snacks that can help reduce the sugar in your child's mouth!

If your child lost a baby tooth recently, it can take up to six months for a permanent adult tooth to appear in its place. Still waiting? There are times when a permanent tooth does not follow its baby tooth and erupts correctly. Your child’s permanent teeth may not have enough space to erupt into place, or it’s possible that the tooth underneath is erupting in the wrong direction. If you’re concerned about a tooth that’s slow to appear, it’s best to have us evaluate your child. Give us a call and make sure everything is on track for a beautiful smile!

One of the most common types of oral trauma for infants is tripping or falling with a toothbrush. While we're always happy to hear that a little one loves her toothbrush, it's best to have your child sit while brushing or stand in one place while being supervised. And of course, you'll want to make sure that you're the one doing the brushing until your child develops dexterity to do it themselves (usually around the same time they learn to tie their shoes.) Stay safe!

Just a quick reminder to keep you and your kids hydrated during this hotter-than-normal summer. Water isn't only great for your body, but is one of the best things you can give your child to prevent cavities. Drink up!

Did you know that sugary drinks can be more damaging to teeth than candy and other sweets? In fact, much of the decay we see in our office is caused by frequent access to drinks other than water. Even diluted juice provides bacteria with just what they need to attack your child’s teeth. Encourage your child to drink water whenever possible.

Did you know that mouth breathing can cause dental problems? Mouth breathing can cause dry mouth, leading to tooth decay and gum disease. If your child is a frequent mouth breather, we can help uncover underlying causes and develop a plan to protect your child’s unique dental needs.

Until you are confident that you're child can be independent, it's essential to supervise their toothbrushing to ensure they're using the correct technique and brushing for a full two minutes.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a minimal amount of fluoride toothpaste on your baby's teeth as soon as they appear. For children under 3, a smear of toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice is all they need. After age 3, a pea-sized amount is recommended.

We all need an occasional reminder to stop everything we're doing and spend time playing with our children. Find something they love to do - from coloring to pretending to be silly. Never forget to spend precious time making memories today.

A toothbrush that is too big or too small can make it difficult for kids to clean their teeth and gums effectively. Ensure your little ones use a toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles that fit comfortably in their mouths.

Does your child bite their nails? Did you know that frequent nail biting can damage teeth and gums? In addition to the possibility of chipped or cracked teeth, nail biting can irritate sensitive gum tissue. It also introduces bacteria to the mouth, making you more likely to get sick. Help your children stop biting their nails by using a positive reward system, bitter-tasting polish, or even a fidget toy to keep idle hands busy.
