Students from the UTSA’s College of Business traveled to Costa Rica for an 8-day field trip. Finance Professor Ron Sweet, Associate Professor of Practice, led this team to provide students with some unique experiences in applied finance and applied economics.

The students embarked on a transformative trip where they engaged with local micro-lending partners, emphasizing the importance of data collection and business ethics. They visited partner farms and businesses, organizing a carnival for the community. The students also toured medical and dental clinics, a banana farm, and learned about a foster care and tutoring project. Despite their busy schedule, they found time for recreational activities like hiking, cycling, swimming and diving. They also played several games of soccer, including one major challenge against the local community. The trip culminated in presentations to the partners, exchanging UTSA T-shirts and a photo contest. This experience was enriching for both students and the Costa Rican community, thanks to generous support from the Carlos & Malú Alvarez International Fund and the College of Business.

Learn more about Nina’s trip to France!
——————
Hello! My name is Nina De La Torre and I studied abroad in Strasbourg France this past semester!
I feel incredibly grateful for this experience. I got to meet people from all over the world! Overall, I think the people that I got to share the experience with is what made it worthwhile for me. I got to spend the semester rooming with one of my best friends and we got to see so many new sights together! All in all, it allowed me to grow in ways that wouldn’t have happened at home. For me, it was really important that I got to connect with the Jewish community while abroad, it took some adjusting but I’m grateful for all the people who showed me kindness and welcomed me.

Learn more about Daniele’s Experience!!

Let me introduce myself I am Daniele Marino, a master's student in aerospace engineering. I was born and raised in Rome, Italy. Upon taking my bachelor's degree and earning the title of aerospace engineer, my Italian University, University of Rome ''La Sapienza'', provided two scholarships to complete a semester abroad. I could choose among several universities scattered around the world but having since childhood the dream of coming to the states I decided to apply for The University of Texas at San Antonio being close to Houston where the NASA space base is located. To my surprise I won one of the two available scholarships and without thinking about it I left.

For me coming to study here meant fulfilling my lifelong dream. I am currently pursuing my M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering here at UTSA and am already thinking that I want to stay to get my PH.D. as well.
I occupy my days between researcher work, which I do mainly in the lab, studying for the courses I take and sports I play at the sports recreation center. Every day I wake up and know that during the day I will meet new fantastic people with whom to chat, exchange ideas and advice.

I have started to participate in ARC ( Aeronautics and Rocket club) workshops , which is giving me the opportunity to build and design real rockets.

During the time I am spending here, I am also having the opportunity to travel a lot ,in fact, I have visited a lot of new places and cities beyond San Antonio such as Austin, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Corpus Christi and fulfilled my dream of visiting New York. I have seen the Ocean for the first time in my life and tasted foods from different cultures. I also got to attend NBA basketball games and watched my first football game.

The advice I give to everyone is to always try to get out of your comfort zone, to travel to learn about new places, people and cultures. To be open to change in order to extend your point of view. By trying to adapt, you overcome your limitations and fears and this allows us to grow into better people.

Learn more about Tyrique’s study abroad experience in Urbino italy! 🇮🇹🎶

Studying abroad in Italy has been the most impactful experience I might ever have on my career. This pandemic caused me to feel extreme burnout. I felt like I was going insane at school and was desperate for new motivation. Once I got to Italy, I felt a great change in myself. It was something that only could have happened in Italy. I got to feel once again what it was like to be passionate about music. It was a feeling that I feared I would never experience again. You might be thinking to yourself, "what about this trip was so special?" Well, let me tell you, there's quite a lot. From the food, to the easy and cheap travel, there was quite a lot to enjoy from this trip. But, what really gave me passion again was the opportunity to see a professional opera for the first time, as well as being able to study under one of the greatest musicians I've ever gotten the chance to work with. The Opera, "Luisa Miller" by Verdi, was an ethereal experience for me. Never in my life had music moved me to such a degree. I cried 3 separate times due to the raw emotion that was displayed on stage. It was at that moment that I remembered just how much I love music. Then, on top of getting to see a wonderful opera, I got to study under a vocal professor from the Rossini Conservatory. The professor’s name was Agata, and she completely changed my approach to singing. The way she taught was so unique, and her knowledge of the voice was vast. She was absolutely astounding. She gave me pieces that I never thought I was capable of singing. With Agata’s guidance, I was able to develop my voice into a more mature and put together instrument. My agility and control increased exponentially, and my range expanded.
