As we remember the tragic event that occurred at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas 2 years ago, today serves as a reminder of the need for blood for those in need. Every drop of blood donated can save countless lives.
We partnered with South Texas Blood & Tissue to create a commemorative reminder for this solemn anniversary to remind everyone to donate blood if and when they can.

From administering treatments to offering emotional support, patients rely on them during their most vulnerable moments. They are advocates, educators, and pillars of support for many patients, and without them, the healthcare system wouldn't be what it is today. 🩺

Sandra Jean "Sandy" Bel Wood, 76, peacefully passed away on February 15, 2024, at her San Antonio residence, surrounded by the love of her family and cherished friends.
Sandy was born in San Antonio on January 25, 1948, and spent her formative years in Corpus Christi. After graduating from Tuloso-Midway High School, she pursued her passion for drama and speech at Texas A&I University in Kingsville, now Texas A&M University Kingsville, from 1966 to 1970. While in the drama department, she met the love of her life, Skip Wood, and embarked on her illustrious voice career. In 1968, Sandy made history as one of the first female disc jockeys in the southwest, broadcasting on radio station KINE AM – KPUP FM, which marked the beginning of her remarkable journey in broadcasting. Following their wedding on March 15, 1969, Sandy wrote and recorded ad copy for numerous radio stations across the South and Southwest. Throughout her early career, Sandy's voice resonated with audiences through advertisements for stores such as Ragland’s, Joske’s, Frost Bros., and many others.
On September 16, 1991, Sandy assumed the role of announcer for StarDate, the public education and outreach program of the University of Texas McDonald Observatory. During her tenure with StarDate, she recorded an impressive 10,166 episodes and received the prestigious Gold Award in the Science & Technology Division at the New York Festival. Additionally, she lent her voice to several podcasts for McDonald Observatory projects, narrated videos played at the Observatory’s Frank N. Bash Visitors Center, and contributed to various websites. Before her retirement in 2019, Sandy's charismatic voice graced productions for PBS, The Witte Museum, The Chicago Planetarium, Meade Telescope, and NASA.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Nettie and Wayne Bel, and her brother, Fred Bel. She is survived by her devoted husband Skip, her son Trevor and his wife Maren, and daughter Alanna Escobar, as well as her former daughter-in-law Jessica Wood and granddaughters Sadie Wood and Vivian Wood. She is also survived by her brother Kevin Bel, wife Iris, and nieces Angie Carillo, Jessie Bel, Amy Updegrove, and Kimberly Storm. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jennifer Wallace and Dr. Nora Walker for their compassionate care. A special acknowledgment is also extended to the family’s dear friend, Esther Gonzalez, for the unwavering love and support she provided.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 15, 2024, at 10:00 am at Christ Episcopal Church, 510 Belknap Pl, San Antonio. In place of flowers, contributions to StarDate, StarDate.org, in Sandy’s honor would be deeply appreciated.

People have been living in what is now called El Paso for more than 10,000 years. The land that is now known as Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site - Texas Parks and Wildlife has been integral to that history.
The park’s name gives a clue to its resources. “Hueco” means “hollow” in Spanish, in this case referring to the natural rock basins and pits that mark the landscape. For most of the time that humans have lived here, those rain-filled hollows provided the only water source for many miles around.
Hueco Tanks is known for its beautiful rock art, both paintings and carvings, created by the Jornada Mogollon people, who lived in the area beginning around 1150. Other features include bedrock mortars or molcajetes for processing foods such as agave, corn, and mesquite beans.
Among the other Native American peoples who have historically used the site are the Kiowa, Mescalero Apache, and Tigua (Ysleta del Sur Pueblo). For these groups, Hueco Tanks is an important part of their heritage from the past into the present.
Modern tribes with ties to the region include the Apache Tribe, Comanche Nation, Fort Sill Apache Tribe, Kiowa Indian Tribe, Mescalero Apache Tribe, Tonkawa Tribe, White Mountain Apache Tribe, Wichita and Affiliated Tribes, and Ysleta del Sur Pueblo.
In early 2021, Hueco Tanks was designated a National Historic Landmark for its cultural significance. It is also a State Antiquities Landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
