51 years ago today, members of the Bexar County Medical Society proposed a locally-based blood bank in order to meed the needs of patients in the community.

One year later, we opened our doors as the South Texas Regional Blood Bank and the rest is history!

One of the things that makes our community special may surprise you - the immediate availability of in emergencies. Having blood available for transfusion on the scene of the accident or on the way of the hospital reduces the odds of mortality for trauma victims facing .

Cynthia McFadden breaks down what it takes to make the pre-hospital transfusion program work in her story for NBC News. Her story features some of the organizations and leaders behind the program Dr. Donald Jenkins with UT Health San Antonio and University Health, Eric Epley from STRAC and our own COO, Adrienne Mendoza.

The pre-hospital transfusion program is only possible because of partnerships with healthcare leaders and organizations across our region. We hope to see more pre-hospital transfusion programs save lives across the country.

In honor of the victims and survivors of Robb Elementary, we will be taking a day of silence across our social media platforms.

Today we celebrated the of our newly renovated donor center in ! A huge shoutout to New Braunfels Chamber and their members for attending. Thank you to Nicole, who shared her personal story about needing blood. ♥

We unveiled our new donation experience, too! These headsets give donors a relaxing and mixed-reality immersive experience during their blood donation.

Almost two years ago, the Uvalde community was forever changed by a senseless act of violence. We will always remember the victims of the Robb Elementary shooting and continue to keep the survivors in our hearts.

In remembrance, a special shirt will be available for blood donors in our donor store. Funds will go towards the Uvalde Strong Fund through San Antonio Area Foundation to support the survivors, honor the victims and their families, and support the Uvalde community.
