Flattening stock may not be elementary, but it is an essential woodworking skill.

Most woodworking starts with a flat reference face. A shop full of heavy machinery can help, but there are instances when you must rely on muscle power.

When boards are too big for your jointer, or you don't have one available to you, take the path of least resistance and use a combination of hand and power tools to get the job done.

What is the easiest wood to woodwork with?

A truly useful woodworking bench serves a lot of needs. It secures all kinds of workpieces for operations ranging from rough stock prep to detailed handwork. It offers a flat planing and assembly surface, and provides a suitable platform for a wide variety of hand and power tool operations.

This bench is a slight departure from a more traditional woodworking bench, it's made entirely out of plywood.

Woodturning provides quick gratification, because many smaller projects can easily be completed in a single evening, allowing even the beginner woodworker to relax and experience a sense of accomplishment.

With the number and variety of woodturning tools present though, tool selection can be a confusing task for the beginner woodturner. Knowing the strengths of gouges, skews, scrapers and parting tools can help make choosing the right tool an easier task.

Awl yeah!
The awl is simple, but effective hand tool. They are perfect for punching indents in your work to position fasteners precisely. And you can use them with a straightedge to scribe a line on your woodworking project.

In woodworking circles, the lock miter is often referred to as a “trick bit.” By a feat of geometric genius, the bit creates both halves of a mitered corner–complete with interlocking tongues and grooves–with a single router table setup.

In addition to concealing end grain, the joint’s interlocking profile provides a mechanical advantage that offers an increased gluing surface and keeps parts from shifting when they’re clamped up.

Despite these advantages, using this trick bit can be tricky. In order for the joint to mate correctly, the setup must be spot-on. The centerlines of the bit and stock must be perfectly aligned, and the fence must be set back from the outer edge of the bit by exactly the thickness of your stock.

As much as we all like to work with solid wood, there are plenty of uses for plywood, MDF, and other sheet goods in many woodworking projects. Relative to solid wood, sheet goods are more stable and often much larger. While this larger size has plenty of advantages, when you are working solo things can get tricky.

Fortunately, there are lots of strategies for wrangling sheet goods alone with efficiency and minimum muscle. Of course, handling these big panels isn’t just about transporting them. It’s also about maneuvering them to produce efficient, accurate cuts.

Checkout this guide for some low-tech tricks for moving sheet goods while ensuring a smooth workflow https://bit.ly/3Z0UAKu

Woodworkers worry about “food-safe” finishes more than poolside moms fret about kids snarfing down chicken salad sandwiches then diving into the deep end.

All drying oils and varnishes sold for finishing wood are non-toxic and food safe when fully cured.

However, there’s a second, often overlooked, point that you can’t ignore, when you give a well-crafted wood gift and watch the recipient’s nose crinkle the second they unwrap the box: Some finishes take a lot longer than others to become fully cured and food safe.

While trace amounts of finish or solvent don’t pose a serious health risk, the smell can ruin the taste of certain foods. This “smell-factor” is almost as important for non-food related projects such as pens, jewelry boxes, and blanket chests, where you don’t want any lingering solvent odor.

Every woodworker should have at least one shoulder plane in their tool kit. Shoulder planes are indispensable for trimming dados, grooves, rabbets, tenons, and shoulders.

If you cut the majority of your joinery on a table saw, or by hand, a shoulder plane is one of the quickest ways to eliminate the marks left by a saw blade, and to fine-tune your joints.

In a pinch you can even use one to form a shallow rabbet. Contrary to what you might think, a shoulder plane is just as easy to set-up and use as any other hand plane.
