Bluesound released the Node X to commemorate their 10-year anniversary in the streaming game. To celebrate this achievement, Bluesound upgraded their Node streaming pre-amplifier. Today we will go over what is different between the two as well as factors you may want to consider when purchasing for your HiFi needs.

The Node has proven to be a great pre-amp that offers some cool secondary uses such as using it as a dedicated headphone amplifier with its 3.5mm headphone jack. From a connection standpoint, both the Node and the Node X offer the same array digital and analog hook ups.

Now to the meat and potatoes, what are the improvements Bluesound brought with the new Node X. For starters when you open the Node X from its box, you will notice a remote is now included. This allows for easier volume control as you would no longer need to open the BluOS app to control volume. In addition to the volume control, there are also presets on the remote allowing for quicker and more convenient access to your favorite listening content. From a value perspective this remote retails for $59.00 USD and accounts for a large chuck of the $150.00 USD price difference. The most substantial improvement comes from the DAC, or “digital to analog converter” in the Node X. Bluesound opted for an industry proven ESS Saber DAC. This upgrade allows the Node X itself to decode the digital signals from streaming services into an amplifiable analog signal with much more detail and clarity. Another performance upgrade comes from the fact that Bluesound knows its customers listen to headphones. Upgrading the headphone jack to a ¼” jack and pairing that with a THX premium quality headphone amp is a key area where you will hear a big difference between the two models. The ¼” jack allows users to plug in a wider range of HiFi headphones. The THX premium grade headphone amp bolsters this ability, delivering a truly HiFi experience. Last but not least the Node X has had a color change to silver, signifying the 10-year anniversary and exclusivity of this product.

So, the big question, why would you upgrade to the Node X or choose the standard Node? While there are clearly some major upgrades, the standard Node may still be the right choice while saving a few bucks. If you plan on using the Node purely as a streamer using a DAC external, the standard Node may be the right choice. Where you may want to upgrade to the Node X comes when you utilize the new ESS Saber DAC. If you plan on using the internal DAC direct to the analog output on your amplifier, you will see a noticeable increase in performance. To be more specific, the separation between instruments and different acoustical notes is increased. This allows for you to close your eyes and picture the sound stage with greater detail. Think about “Snow” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers - you will really be able to tell that the guitarist is stage left while vocals are stage right. Another noticeable improvement is the sound floor. Some people describe this as a dark sound but what simply put its how quiet your speakers are when playing loud.

To conclude we put forth three situations with three recommendations. First if you are looking simply for a streamer and will use the digital output into a standalone DAC, or an amplifier with built-in DAC, choose the Node. If you plan on using this devices as a streamer and a pre-amplifier, the Node X is our preference. The ESS Saber DAC is well worth the money. Now if you plan to use headphones with your Node, choose the Node X. As a secondary way of listening, or if you plan on using the Node as a dedicated headphone amplifier, the Node X is a substantial step up when comparing headphone performance. For a bonus, don’t forget the convenience the Node X remote brings as well.
