Recently returned from Berlin, Germany where she was a Resident Artist for the Contemporary at Blue Star’s Berlin Residency Program at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien,Newsome has created a body of work that explores diaspora, girlhood, and femininity through photographs, installation, soft sculpture, and more.
When discussing the artwork, Newsome told Sala Diaz, “...this series explores the complexities of femininity and womanhood, drawing inspiration from my mother’s upbringing in Germany and the intricate layers of identity that make up my perception of self. Through research, archived narratives, imagery, and personal and shared experiences, this series delves into the intimate moments that stem from my own journey of understanding and education regarding beauty, childhood, femininity, and womanhood from an African American perspective.”
Jeffry Gibson: “I wanted to map out some moments in American history when there is this real promise of equality, liberty and justice and then think about what those terms mean.”
The images of Jeffrey's installations in Venice (more than may be seen in this NY Times article) look so ambitious, so engaging, so well conceived. Wish we could get a San Antonio crew to go there! His work richly deserves all the accumulating attention it has been getting.
Representing the U.S. and Critiquing It in a Psychedelic Rainbow Jeffrey Gibson’s history-making turn at the Venice Biennale brings the gay and Native American artist center stage with works of struggle and freedom.

In Kat Cadena’s exhibition, symbols of the Palestinian people and their resistance adorn the walls through small ink drawings and a banner. Olive branches, a symbolic representation for Palestinians of their nationality and connection to their land, along with poppy flowers, a national flower of Palestine, are juxtaposed with human hands and a child's face. In this case we see the Palestine sunbird (Cinnyris osea), a symbol of Palestinian hope (for freedom): the sunbird defies borders, flying where it wants and needs to go at any point in time.
This is the last available artwork for sale. Proceeds from the sale of select artworks will be donated to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF).
