Get on the Bus Lobby Day Photo Recap
Last week on August 13th we stood with in a day of action at the CA State Capitol. Together, we rallied behind SB 1340, a critical piece of legislation brought forth by Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas ( )that stands to advance protections for Black and Brown workers across California.
This lobby day was a true demonstration of the power of collective action. We shared our stories, engaged with lawmakers, and made it clear that Black workers in Southern California and beyond deserve fair treatment, dignity, and opportunities to thrive. SB 1340 is more than just a billāit represents a bold step toward economic justice, tackling systemic issues that disproportionately affect our communities.
Weāre incredibly proud of the work done last week and this is only the beginning. Weāll continue to uplift the voices of Black workers and push for meaningful change. Thank you to everyone who showed up, spoke out, and supported this cause.
Letās keep the momentum going and get SB1340 signed into law!
This Wednesday August 21st join us in Los Angeles at the Beehive from 5:30-8:30pm for an incredible evening celebrating Black August and Black worker power. Weāll experience the premiere of the Docu-series, connect with community leaders, enjoy good food, music, dancing and being in community. Earlier this week we participated in a Lobby Day at the CA State Capitol for Senate Bill 1340.
Senate Bill 1340 aims to empower local civil and human rights departments to enforce workplace discrimination laws in collaboration with the California Civil Rights Department. This would address the backlog of complaints the state has struggled to process, allowing cases to be handled more quickly and efficiently.
Studies have shown Black workers are disproportionately affected by workplace discrimination. The bill is especially beneficial for our workers, providing more accessible local agencies that are better equipped to serve our communities and have multiple outlets to process our claims.
Stayed tuned for a recap of our lobby day !
š Shout out to our colleagues at the Los Angeles Black Worker Center for hosting a fantastic Black Worker Symposium āLetās Stand on Businessā last weekend! With over 100 attendees, including academics, union leaders, municipal representatives, community members, Black Workers, CARE, and Black Worker Centers from San Diego and the Inland Empire, the event was a huge success. DejĆ” Thomas (CARE) presented a report titled "Worker Warriors," which highlighted the achievements of the "1,000 Strong" workforce development program.
The summit featured engaging breakout sessions and a Fish Bowl circle where workers openly shared personal stories about their challenges in finding equitable, dignified, and family-sustaining work. Stay tuned for more updates and collaborations as we continue to advocate for Black Workers in the region! āšæš¼
Last week, the SoCal Black Worker Hub for Regional Organizing hosted a strategic retreat at Courtyard at LA Live in DTLA in collaboration with member organizations, including the Inland Empire, Los Angeles, and San Diego Black Worker Centers, Black Worker Center Freedom Fellows, and UCLAās Center for the Advancement of Racial Equality (CARE) at Work. The theme of the retreat was "Empowering Black Worker Ecosystems: A Strategic Retreat for Workforce Development," where we gathered to engage in discussions and activities aimed at building power among the Black workforce in Southern California.
The retreat, led by facilitator Ada U. Mbogu, MAIOP, was a space for experiencing Black Joy, sharing updates on work initiatives, celebrating successes, addressing challenges, and strategizing for the future. We learned from and affirmed each other's contributions, bonded over meals at Black-owned soul food establishments such as "Fixins" and "Delicious at Dunbar," and engaged in group interactions focused on organizational growth, fundraising, and program development.
Throughout the retreat, we focused on enhancing workforce development, designing effective programs, and evaluating strategies for continuous improvement. The training provided was culturally specific, relevant, and meaningful, with a focus on equipping attendees with the skills and knowledge needed to advocate for and support Black Workers in Southern California. The overall goal was to strengthen the Black Worker ecosystem through organized campaigns and advocacy efforts.

š¦ Let's Stay Safe, Inland Empire Black Worker Center Community! š¦
As we continue to navigate the challenges of the COVID-19, it's important to stay informed and vigilant. A new variant strain of the virus is causing a spike in cases across the U.S., and we must take precautions to protect ourselves and our community.
According to recent reports, this new variant strain is leading to an increase in infections, hospitalizations, and deaths. We need to be extra careful and proactive in following safety guidelines to prevent further spread of the virus.
Let's continue to wear masks and wash our hands frequently. Our health and well-being are paramount, and by staying safe and taking necessary precautions, we can help protect each other and our community. Let's look out for one another and prioritize our health.
Stay safe, stay informed, and let's support each other. We are stronger and healthier, together. Together, we can overcome our worst challenges and emerge stronger than ever. šŖš¾š
COVID cases spike as new variant strain spreads in U.S. COVID-19 cases are spiking in the U.S. as a new variant spreads. Emergency room visits appear to be at the highest level since February, according to new data. Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, joins CBS News with more.

Are you passionate about ensuring fair, just, and equitable elections for Black voters and all communities? Do you want to play a crucial role in upholding democracy and making sure every voice is heard at the ballot box?
We are encouraging you to to serve as Election Poll Workers ($20/hour) in the upcoming election. By being a Poll Worker, you have the opportunity to ensure that things are done fairly, justly, and equitably for Black voters and all voters in our community.
Just as we advocate for representation in juries to bring our experiences, perspectives, insights, and racial justice lens, we need to do the same at the polls. By volunteering as Poll Workers, we can help make a difference in the electoral process and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to vote without barriers or discrimination.
If you live in the state of California, you can apply to be an Election Poll Worker at https://pollworker.sos.ca.gov/s/ (https://pollworker.sos.ca.gov/s/).
Let's step up, get involved, and make our voices heard in the democratic process. Together, we can ensure a more inclusive, representative, and equitable election for all. šš³ļø
I was privileged to attend the UCLA Strategic Labor Research Conference held on August 2-4, 2024; it serves as a platform for California's labor movement researchers to engage in discussions about the future of research and organizing within the labor movement. The conference featured workshops on various topics such as financial analysis, data visualization, strategic corporate research, and research methodologies related to health and safety issues, among others. Keynote speaker Kim Kelly, an independent journalist and author, discussed the history of American labor and shared her insights on labor, class, politics, and culture.
One of the key sessions at the conference was on "Strategic Campaigning and the Green Economy," highlighting the importance of understanding the implications of green technologies on job creation and the need for strategic campaigns around these developments. The panel also emphasized the significance of forming "blue-green" coalitions to advocate for green projects and identify policy leverage points.
Additionally, another panel focused on lessons from the past collective, FAST, which pioneered the concept of corporate campaigns within organized labor. Panelists, including retired union organizers and strategic research analysts, shared their experiences and strategies for conducting effective campaigns in the labor movement.
It was crucial for the Inland Empire Black Worker Center to participate in this labor research conference as it provided an opportunity to engage with experts in the field, gain knowledge on cutting-edge research methodologies, and exchange ideas on strategic campaigns and policy advocacy within the labor movement. By participating in such conferences, organizations like the Inland Empire Black Worker Center can enhance their research skills, network with other labor researchers, and contribute to advancing the interests of Black Workers in the broader labor movement.
