Check out what our friends at Metrolink will bring to Union Station Los Angeles as part of Rail Safety: Los Angeles next month - a F125, Tier IV locomotive!

The Electro-Motive Diesel F125 is a four-axle diesel passenger locomotive designed by EMD for the North American market since 2015. This powerful locomotive features a Caterpillar C175-20 V20 diesel engine that delivers 4,700 hp (3,500 kW).

Fun Fact: Did you know the F125 is also known as a "Tier 4 locomotive" because it meets the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Tier IV emissions compliance? That's right. These locomotive's clean operations help reduce 13.75 tons of emissions, equivalent to removing 783 passenger vehicles a year or eliminating 8,850,451 miles driven by an average passenger vehicle.

You'll have an opportunity to view this sleek, futuristic locomotive up close on September 21 and 22!

We're just a little more than a month away from Santa Fe steam returning to Union Station Los Angeles!

Come see our 1927-built steam locomotive on Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22, at Los Angeles Union Station as part of the SBRHS' Rail Safey: Los Angeles event located at Track 15.

Did you know? Santa Fe 3751 not only pulled the first named Santa Fe passenger train in Los Angeles Union Station on May 7, 1939, but it also pulled the last steam powered passenger train from San Diego to Los Angeles in August of 1953?

Today, the San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society (SBRHS) operates Santa Fe 3751 as a real-life, educational tool to showcase topics such as railroad history and safety.

We look forward to seeing you next month!

Now pulling into Union Station Los Angeles, Rail Safety: Los Angeles!

The San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society (SBRHS), with presenting partners Union Station Los Angeles, Metro Los Angeles, Metrolink, and Amtrak, will welcome the public to Rail Safety: Los Angeles this September - the largest railroad safety event in downtown Los Angeles in more than a decade, as part of Rail Safety Month.

The SBRHS’ historic, 1927-built steam locomotive, Santa Fe 3751, will headline the free, two-day event on Track 15 of Los Angeles Union Station on Saturday, September 21, and Sunday, September 22, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

The 3751 will be joined by some of today’s most modern Metrolink and Amtrak passenger train equipment and information booths, providing a unique educational opportunity for attendees to learn about the size, scale, and speed of trains and learn new ways to be safe around railroad tracks.

Plan on joining us for one or both days of this exciting summer event! To learn more, visit: https://www.sbrhs.org/news/rail-safety-los-angeles-2024.html

As we continue to hop our way into spring, there’s been lots happening on the restoration of our new tool car.

Not only has the car been pulled out to allow the crew better access for removing components prior to rolling the first truck out, but headway is also being made inside the car to remove old wall paneling and insulation.

You can help this restoration continue by donating today. Visit: https://www.sbrhs.org/donate/

Wishing our friends and supporters a very Happy Easter!

Thank you to the John H. Emery Rail Heritage Trust for their selection of the SBRHS to receive $15,000 to go toward the implementation of full PTC on Santa Fe 3751.

The funds from this grant will play an important role in the purchasing and testing of this state-of-the-art equipment that once installed, will allow 3751 to lead trains on the mainline once again.

We understand that there are many other rail preservation projects taking place across the country right now and cannot thank the John H. Emery Rail Heritage Trust enough for their support in this crucial endeavor to keep Santa Fe mainline steam operating safely for generations to come.

You too can help us reach our goal!

Greg Schultz recently shared these black and white scenes from 2002 when he caught 3751 at Redondo Junction and highballing through Rancho Cucamonga, CA, the following day as the locomotive began its journey to way to Williams, AZ, as part of the NRHS Convention that year.

Thank you for sharing these with us, Greg!

We're using this to look back on 3751's trip to San Diego from Los Angeles in June of 2008

Photographer Craig Walker shared this fantastic photo with the following caption: "As the big 4-8-4 passes, the tender looms large at this angle. Santa Fe 3751 and Amtrak P42DC 117 have cut off of train 95641-01A, and the power will be turned on the wye at Miramar before the return trip to Los Angeles. The San Diego to LA train will be symboled A-95831-01. Note the red trolley in the background..."

You can help make trips like this possible again by donating today! Visit www.sbrhs.org to learn about a number of campaigns currently underway on 3751, including repainting the tender, and other support equipment.

Good afternoon 3751 fans!

The steam crew has worked all week to get the locomotive ready for you to enjoy this weekend, and today the engine moved out of its home at Redondo Junction to another part of the yard to begin the short trip to Los Angeles Union Station.

3751 will spend tonight inside Amtrak’s secured yard where there is no public access.

Early tomorrow morning the locomotive will travel to Los Angeles Union Station and be spotted at its final display location prior to the kickoff of this weekend’s event. Please do not trespass on railroad property and stay back from the tracks at least 25 feet where permitted to do so.

Think the engine looks good in the photo below from today? It looks even better at night!

Join us Sunday evening for our night photography session with 3751 on the newly restored Amtrak turntable. For more details, see the previous Facebook post or email [email protected] for more info.

We look forward to see you all tomorrow!

We're another day closer to Los Angeles Union Station Train Festival 2023: A Celebration of Past, Present & Future

Get ready for red, white and blue this September!

The Southern California Railway Museum's ex-ATSF No. 5704, repainted into its resplendent bicentennial paint scheme that it originally wore in 1976, will be on display with us at Los Angeles Union Station Train Festival 2023: A Celebration of Past, Present & Future .

Built in 1973, the venerable SD45-2 was given the duty of wearing these patriotic colors as part of the nation's bicentennial of the American Revolution. Following a hard-working career with the Santa Fe Railway and the BNSF Railway, the unit was retired and donated to the Southern California Railway Museum in late 2021.

After an exceptional restoration by partners that included BNSF, Mid America Car Inc. - Locomotive and Sherwin-Williams, the beautifully repainted locomotive made the journey from its restoration site in Kansas to California.

This will be the first time that No. 5704 will be on public display since arriving in California, so be sure to have your cameras ready!

Yesterday found the steam crew once again deep inside the tender clearing out mud and scale. During the interior clean out, the baffles were inspected and found to be in very good condition.

While not glamorous, this work is critical to ensure that clean water is what 3751 gets to quench its thirst during operations.

Our trusty shop vac wasn’t too fond of the duty it had for the day, but thanks to a few cleanings throughout the job and one detailed cleaning at the end - it’s ready for another day’s work when called upon.

Former Santa Fe 4-8-4 no. 3751 is the star of today’s , seen in a glamorous portrait by Stan Kistler and chosen by Erin Rose, reference and digital projects archivist.

"I was recently fortunate enough to digitize a few Kistler color slides for an upcoming presentation (those coming to Conversations 2023 are in for a treat!),” recalls Erin. “While I was working through some requested shots, I serendipitously stumbled across this photograph. Locomotive no. 3751 was built by the Baldwin Company in 1927, and I am extra fortunate that Elrond Lawrence, one of our resident train experts, knew her well … in fact, as a teenager he helped the volunteer team that restored 3751 during the 1980s; she returned to operation in 1991. Stan shot this particular image in Wellington, Kansas, while the locomotive was powering a Santa Fe Railway employee appreciation special during August and September of 1992. The train was overnighting during its return trip from Chicago, IL, to Los Angeles, CA.”

“I was blown away by how clearly the soft headlight beam cuts across the photograph, and the stunning purple blue sky is an embodiment of one of my all-time favorite colors. The more I look at it, I find additional details – from the neon-teal light reflected off the side of the locomotive to the realization that the inside of the bell is painted bright red! Stan Kistler is definitely worming his way into my heart with gems like this." (Kistler-SF-TEMP-21-002)

As old man winter continues to provide Southern California with wet weather and cold temperatures, the steam crew continues to find ways to work on 3751 despite the less than ideal elements. Most recently, the crew has nearly completed thoroughly cleaning the inside of the tender.

This deep cleaning has included sweeping, pressure washing, scrubbing, rinsing and hours upon hours of work to clean out tough-to-reach areas by hand.

While not the most glamorous job, this work ensures that 3751 will be prepared for any and all operations in 2023 and beyond. Potential outings are still in the development stages but rest assured, we are working to get the locomotive out this year.
