Drew Brophy, Artist

I am loving our new decorative art Surfboards, I designed them to hang beautifully on the wall as functional art. They are custom made surfboards with some of my favorite art printed on the fiberglass with amazing vibrancy, each one is finished with glossed and polished resin. Perfect for any space needing a unique piece of art which is both sculpture and painting.

I never thought I'd say this, but, I'm almost out of original art.

I used to have a big inventory, I’d paint dozens of canvas every year.

But after I got sick and lost a year of my life, there aren’t many paintings left.

Recently I pulled some sketches out of safekeeping. Some go all the way back to the 1990's from my days.

One of the sketches was for my OHANA painting that was commissioned by Eddie Vedder (yes, that Eddie) for his OHANA FESTIVAL art.

It’s been fun digging through the archives. Brings back so many memories of projects I worked on with so many different cool people.

I just added some of the framed sketches to my site for those who collect things like that.

Super tedious work getting the tape down for this Sri Yantra painting.

Stoked VISSLA asked me to be one of the judges for their ADD COLOR SURFBOARD ART CONTEST. The grand prize is $5,000.

Surfboards are a beautiful celebration of craftsmanship and art. They are handmade by a team of people dedicated to their craft.

As a grom, my first boards were from the late 70’s full of resin pigment and resin pinlines. Competing in surf contests in the 80’s, I’d ride acid smears on Action Surfboards and radical airbrushes of Town & Country boards. I loved having my boards explode with color.

I was painting production surfboards in my teens for Kelly Richards Perfection Surfboards in South Carolina. Then I was offered my dream job in the 1990’s, airbrushing production surfboards on the North Shore for Bill Barnfield’s Pro Glass. I was instantly painting for all the best shapers and surfers in the world. I was also experimenting with Posca pens on my own boards and for underground surfers who weren’t afraid to let me go crazy with the art!

After a few years in Hawaii I moved to SoCal where I got a job painting boards at the busiest glass shop in the world at the time, Pro Glass. It ran 24-7 making boards for Hobie, Stewart and many others. Around this time I also painted at night for Lost and Matt Biolos where I found the perfect fit for my Posca Paint Pen style. This ultimately led me to painting in surfboard factories all over the world, honing my skills with some of the best surfboard craftsmen in the world.

I’m happy Vissla chose me as one of the judges; I love seeing the creativity of all the disciplines from the resin pigment to the resin pin lines to the true skill of traditional airbrushing and free form airbrushing and the creative freedom that Posca paint pens allow. What I would love to see is a mix of all the disciplines.

I thank all the craftsmen and artists in the past and present for paving the way for all of us. Can’t wait to see all the art submitted!

Maria and I got back from a private Art, Music and Healing Retreat in Costa Rica a few days ago. Here we are in Nosara on our last night there. Was a great trip for both of us!
