Leveraging Technology to Create Communities of Care for Older Adults Living with HIV
THE STORY: In a three act play, the second act (2nd AC+) represents the “rising action” of the story. During the second act, the protagonist faces new challenges that they are struggling to deal with. Through the second act the protagonist develops new skills (usually with the help of a new character) and emerges a HERO ready for the third act.
HIV is no longer a terminal diagnosis, but a chronic disease like high blood pressure or diabetes. However, because many persons who lived through the AIDS epidemic did not expect to live, some feel ill-prepared to manage the new challenges of aging. This project is the 2nd AC+.
THE BEGINNING: Dr. Maile Young Karris, an Infectious Diseases Physician began to realize that many of her older patients were struggling with isolation and loneliness. At the same time, she knew how enjoyable they are to be with, how much more they had to offer to those around them and wondered what she could do to help them successfully age. Discussion with community members (Jeff Taylor at the HIV + Aging Research Project-Palm Springs (H+ARP-PS) recommended she look into the Village movement(https://www.npr.org/2017/12/12/570248798/village-movement-allows-elderly-to-age-in-their-homes). She applied for and received funding from Gilead Sciences to implement the Village Model in Central San Diego. This joint project between the San Diego LGBT Center and UCSD’s AntiViral Research Center will involve 1) a general needs assessments (we want youth, adults, older adults ... LGBTQIA and non ... HIV-seropositive and HIV-seronegative), 2) focus groups to explore what “community” means to individuals and barriers and facilitators to implementing the village model and 3) implementing the village model with the assistance of a hyperlocal social app.
HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE: If you live in the Central Region of San Diego and are ages 18+, please complete our needs assessment survey at www.BuildCommunitySD.com
