They started the first Waterkeeper organization in the United States, and proved so effective at protecting water resources that Waterkeeper organizations trickled throughout the country. Once established, we became the 15th Waterkeeper organization in the country and focused our efforts on local, community-based

Happy Friday!👋 Peter Rowe highlights our Earth to Beer with in this article. “Partnering with San Diego Coastkeeper, this is Coronado’s contribution to the national Earth to Beer campaign, which urges breweries to buy ingredients from environmentally sound sources. A good cause and, in this instance, a good beer: hop-forward — Amarillo and Simcoe hops — and balanced.”

“Imperial Beach is a Southern California community wedged between San Diego and Tijuana, and it’s the kind of place where you’d like to stroll the pier, walk the sand, and surf the waves. But for the smell...The reek and the caution is because each day, millions of gallons of raw sewage originating in Mexico is gushing into the Pacific Ocean just south of here. Paloma Aguirre is the mayor of Imperial Beach.”
Paloma Aguirre, Imperial Beach Mayor: “We’re living the biggest environmental crisis in the nation in my opinion. We have been named, sadly the most polluted beach in the entire United States.”
Phillip Musegaas, Executive director, San Diego Coastkeeper: “We’ve known how to treat sewage for over 100 years, we just need to have the political will and the money to invest in it to treat it properly, because we should not, absolutely not have people living next to a river of raw sewage and toxic chemicals. That’s, it’s insane.”

Join us for a Music Fest with a great cause! The Vinniepalooza Music Fest comes to Deano’s Pub on Saturday, June 22, and will serve to raise awareness of the current pollution issue affecting the Tijuana River Valley and the downstream coastal waters. Vince Meehan is the founder of Strike A Chord, a coalition of local musicians and bands that volunteer their time to help various San Diego non-profits.
Strike A Chord will be hosting the Vinniepalooza event in support of San Diego Coastkeeper and our efforts to address the Tijuana River Sewage Crisis. Throughout the event organizers will be directing attendees to Coastkeeper’s website via QR codes where they can sign up to donate, volunteer, become a member or just to learn about our bold, recent actions to address this decades long issue.
The show will feature three of San Diego’s top original bands. Starting the show will be The Vaquitos, a blues-based rock/pop band. Then, it’s Revelation 69, a local rock band with a very Hollywood attitude and look. Finishing the show will be the Discount Cadavers, a group that has a very late 70s CBGBs vibe. Meehan says the core focus will be to help heal our South Bay, but that this event will also serve as a celebration of San Diego’s diverse and vibrant original music scene.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Welcome back to our two part blog series on the Tijuana sewage crisis. In Part 1, we talked about the history, causes and impacts of the crisis, and how the ongoing failure to make progress has its roots in cross-border politics, funding and political neglect on both sides of the border.
Here in Part 2 we’ll focus on how local elected officials, community groups, clean water advocates like San Diego Coastkeeper and Surfrider, and local residents are joining forces to push for solutions and demand accountability and action to solve this crisis.

San Diego Coastkeeper’s Executive Director, Phillip Musegaas was invited to yesterday morning’s press conference where the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Acting Assistant Administrator for Water Bruno Pigott, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, and the California Water Resources Control Board announced a $37 million investment in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding to support the South Mission Storm Drain and Green Infrastructure project.
This investment will strengthen resiliency to increasingly intense rain events and help protect residents from flooding in densely populated Mission Beach.

"One year ago, the county Board of Supervisors asked staff to find out how badly the worsening cross-border pollution has affected South County’s economy.
A total of 63 businesses responded to the survey, indicating that more than 70 percent are affected by the sewage crisis. Regarding revenue, 66 percent of participants reported a decrease due to beach closures. Several said they lost at least $100,000 in earnings in the last year. They also had to lay off employees.
When asked about the future should the cross-border issue not improve, most businesses said they would have trouble keeping their doors open, and several reported they plan on relocating or shutting down, according to the report." - Tammy Murga

⚠️ Nurdles are everywhere. Never heard of them? They are the raw form of plastic resin that’s melted and molded into everything from soda bottles to clothing fabrics, from food packaging to artificial Christmas trees.
“BNSF’s freight trains are routinely leaking and spilling toxic plastic nurdles into our precious coastal lagoons and Pacific Ocean, degrading our coastal waters, threatening sea turtles and other marine life, and directly contributing to our global plastic pollution crisis,” said Phillip Musegaas, executive director of San Diego Coastkeeper.

The Tijuana River watershed is home to the Kumeyaay People and over 2.8 million residents on both sides of the border. Decades of mismanagement and under-investment in this river have left it choked by pollution, limiting coastal access and causing serious threats to public health.
Urge Congress to fully fund the Comprehensive Infrastructure Solution (CIS) that would upgrade the wastewater infrastructure along the border for current and future generations.

"Is the federal government violating its own clean water act when it comes to our border sewage crisis?
A couple of environmental groups said yes, and they’re taking their case to court.
The Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation and San Diego Coastkeeper filed a lawsuit Thursday against International Boundary & Water Commission (IBWC) and Veolia Water North America for violations of the Clean Water Act and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permit."

Last Thursday, San Diego Coastkeeper (Coastkeeper) and Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation (CERF) filed suit in federal court against the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) and Veolia Water North America-West (Veolia) for violations of the South Bay facility’s Clean Water Act discharge permit.
The lawsuit documents hundreds of violations of permit limits for discharges of sewage bacteria and hazardous chemicals over the past five years that have overwhelmed the Tijuana River and coastal ocean waters in San Diego with raw sewage and toxic chemicals.
