To Our Loyal Customers:
Late last year we tragically and unexpectedly lost our lead framer and manager, Andy, to cardiac arrest. After 12 years with us, he was an integral part of our day to day operations and his talent, dedication to the craft, plus his friendship and warm smile, are missed every day.
Due to his absence and another staff departure, we are short staffed and working on training a new hire. Finding someone in such a specialized field, post-pandemic, has been challenging. We ask you to bear with us as we find someone that has the skill and knowledge to complete your orders with the utmost quality and care.
Until that time, we are transitioning to an APPOINTMENT ONLY
schedule for drop-offs to handle the work-load. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work within a “new normal.”
Please call us at 619-275-0461 to schedule your appointment.
Art of Framing will be closed Saturday, October 8th in order to have our parking lot re-paved and sealed. We'll see you next week!

"A good painting to me has always been like a friend. It keeps me company, comforts and inspires."
In celebration of International Women's Day we are honoring Hedy Lamarr, Austrian-American inventor, painter, and actress.
Hedy Lamarr was born in 1914 in Vienna, Austria. In early 1933, at age 18, Lamarr was given the lead in Gustav Machatý's film, Ecstasy. The film became both celebrated and notorious for it's sexuality and was ultimately banned in America.
Shortly after filming, Hedy married an arms dealer named Fritz Mandl, she was 18, he was 33. Hedy quickly learned her husband was controlling and jealous. Her marriage to Mandl eventually became unbearable, and she decided to separate herself from both her husband and country and dressed like a maid, she silently escaped by bicycle in the middle of the night.
After arriving in London in 1937, she met Louis B. Mayer, head of MGM, who was scouting for talent in Europe. She initially turned down the offer he made her (of $125 a week), but then booked herself onto the same New York bound liner as him, and managed to impress him enough to secure a $500 a week contract. Mayer persuaded her to change her name to Hedy Lamarr (to distance herself from her real identity, and "the Ecstasy lady" reputation associated with it.) He brought her to Hollywood in 1938 and began promoting her as the "world's most beautiful woman".
She appeared in 25 movies between 1938 and 1958. Lamarr enjoyed her biggest success playing Delilah in Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah, the highest-grossing film of 1949. Lamarr became a naturalized citizen of the United States at age 38 in 1953.
Although Lamarr had no formal training and was primarily self-taught, she worked in her spare time on various hobbies and inventions. Among the few who knew of Lamarr's inventiveness was aviation tycoon Howard Hughes. She suggested he change the rather square design of his aeroplanes (which she thought looked too slow) to a more streamlined shape, based on pictures of the fastest birds and fish she could find.
During World War II, Lamarr learned that radio-controlled torpedoes, an emerging technology in naval war, could easily be jammed and set off course. She thought of creating a frequency-hopping signal that could not be tracked or jammed. She contacted her friend, composer and pianist George Antheil, to help her develop a device for doing that, and he succeeded by synchronizing a miniaturized player-piano mechanism with radio signals. They drafted designs for the frequency-hopping system, which they patented. Their invention was granted a patent in 1942. This frequency-hopping technology became a precursor to the secure wi-fi, GPS and Bluetooth now used by billions of people around the world.
In 1997, at age 84, she was honored with the American Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Pioneer Award. She was the first woman to win the Bulbie Gnass Spirit of Achievement Bronze Award, given to individuals whose creative lifetime achievements in the arts, sciences, business, or invention fields have significantly contributed to society. In 2014, Lamarr and Antheil were posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Hedy Lamarr died in Florida, on January 19, 2000, aged 85.
