Harvesting Opportunity Collaborative: The Whole Is More Than The Sum of Its Parts to solve the problem of hunger.
Seven months ago, SDHC's Anti-Hunger Network Manager, Sponsler, began convening all the Gleaning groups in the county to share best practice and collaborate efforts. A true healthy collaborative synergy was born that day. The group has continuously met, assisted each other on picks, finding volunteers, and connecting networks all over the county. Together we have picked and brought in over 25,000 pounds of fresh, local produce to families in need in 6 months. Last week, because of this collaboration, teamwork, frequently communications with each other, a local packing house donated 12,000 pounds of local AVOCADOS to Feeding America Food Bank!!! Truly an unbelievable gift that proves working together is more effective than working against each other to solve the problem of hunger.
The Gleaning Convenings include: Paul Hammams, Feeding America Food Banks Procurement Specialist, Dan Heilbrun Fresh Fruit For Families, Vino Pajanor, Faith Espejo, Myrna Pascual of Housing Opportunity Collaborative, Philip Dunn Harvesting San Diego, Nita Kurmins Cropswap Carlsbad, Ruthanne Bryan, Nancy Roy, Cyndy Reynolds, Jane Raddatz of the Backyard Produce Project, Sergio Padilla of Harvest Crops, Laurel Gray of Senior Gleaners, Judy Jacoby Community Garden Network, Richard Winkler VGSD, the IRC, Kristen Hakuri of the SD Farm Bureau, Sadie Sponsler of San Diego Hunger Coalition.
The Gleaning Convenings team is working the final touches of a the creation of a formalized Collaborative now dubbed Harvesting Opportunities Collaborative under the support of The Housing Opportunities Collaborative in partnership with SDHC, FASD, and the Gleaning groups. The HOC/HOC will the process of requesting Gleaners to come out and pick, volunteering at picks, and donating the produce easier and more streamlined for everyone. More exciting details to come later so stay tuned!
