Shopping for eggs can be expensive and confusing! Enjoy this quick read about the difference in egg labels:
Is there a difference between Cage-Free and Free-Range?
Not really. Cage-free means hens live in open indoor spaces (instead of small cages), Free-range means hens have access to the outdoors as well indoors vs. indoors with access to outdoors. However, the outdoors could mean a cramped space where only a few hens can hang out. And heck, they may never even go outside, it’s not like acres of sunny, green pastures, it can be more like a tiny patio.
What about Organic & Free-Range?
Ok, now we have some better standards for free range. Not only does the feed have to be 100% organic, but now the hens have exercise areas, fresh air, clean drinking water, shade, and direct sunlight. So it’s more humane.
What about Pasture-Raised?
If you want eggs from well-treated hens, Pasture-Raised is your choice. These hens were raised outdoors and/or given access, to pastures with a minimum of 108 square feet per hen for at least 6hrs a day. These hens can feed on insects and other foraged foods more easily. Overall, their living conditions are better. Hence, why it is more humane.
What about the protein and fat?
It’s the same, no difference. The nutritional profile is the same regardless of how the hen was raised.
What about Egg Grades – AA, A, B?
They have no nutritional meaning. They refer to the look of the egg, the firmness of egg whites, and the roundness of yolks. If you’re looking for the healthiest egg, the grade does not matter.
Brown or White Eggs?
They have no nutritional meaning. Whether the egg is brown, white, blue, pink, or whatever, it’s based on the breed of the hen.
Different colored yolks?
A darker yolk could indicate that the hen ate more grass and worms. However, the yolk color can also result from being fed or feeding on pigmented flowers or products. The color of the yolk does not signify a healthier or more nutrient-dense egg.
What about claims like "No Added Hormones," "Natural," or "Farm Fresh"?
All B.S. Hens do not need hormones, and chickens and hens produce eggs and meat based on their genetic potential, food, and environment. There is NO definition or standard for "Natural" or "Farm Fresh"; they are completely made up.
