Sakyadhita International Association of Buddhist Women
Working together, Buddhist women are awakening to their tremendous potential for social and spiritual transformation.
In the sixth century BCE, the Buddha affirmed the equal spiritual potential of women and men. This affirmation presented a significant departure from prevailing views that defined women in terms of their biological function and their capacity for productive labor. Buddhism is unique among major religions in recognizing the spiritual equality of women and men. Unfortunately, despite this egalitarian philosophy, women in most Buddhist cultures today do not enjoy equal opportunities.
“To truly include women means to openly embrace their diversity of race, age, ability, faith, body image, and how they identify. Worldwide, women must be included in all fields of endeavor.” ♀

Hello Dear Friends!
This is Sharon A. Suh, your current president, with a request. I am writing a follow up book to Silver Screen Buddha and this time I am going to focus on Buddhist films and television series with particularly strong female characters— but not documentaries. Since this is such a vibrant community, I thought this would be the best place to go for suggestions and recommendations. Thank you so much!

Happy Hanamatsuri! BTSD will celebrate the birth of the historical Buddha tomorrow (Sunday, Apr 7). The flower pavilion holds a small statue of the baby Buddha, and sweet tea is poured over him to represent the "sweet rain" said to have fallen when he was born. The rain caused flowers to bloom out of season, thus the temples celebrate with floral arrangements all over, instead of just on the altars.
Officially, Buddha's birthday is April 8 for Shin Buddhists due to Meiji Era reforms in Japan-- and since the original celebration was on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month, when Japan adopted the Western calendar, it became set as April 8. Buddhists who follow the lunar calendar celebrate approximately a month later (date is variable due to lunar year variations as compared to the solar calendar).

Hi all!
I will be hosting sessions of the Lion's Roar's Women of Wisdom Summit later this month and offering a workshop. There is an incredible line up of some seriously wise women such as Mushim Patricia Ikeda and Rhonda Magee and a whole lot more. I am particularly excited to host Tsultrim Allione's event as well since her book on Women of Wisdom was one of the first I read to set me on the path of studying women and Buddhism as a college student back in the day!

Celebrating Tina Turner and Her Spiritual Life
When Tina Turner reclaimed her throne as the Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll in the 1980s, she attributed her comeback to one thing: the wisdom and power she found in Buddhism. Her spiritual transformation is often overshadowed by the rags-to-riches arc of her life story. But in this groundbreaking biography, Ralph H. Craig III traces Tina’s journey from the Black Baptist church to Buddhism and situates her at the vanguard of large-scale movements in religion and pop culture.
