Project New Village - San Diego

Improving fresh food access in Southeastern San Diego is part of a broad-based movement to build social equity, giving way to healthy neighborhoods.

Our goal of improving fresh food access in Southeastern San Diego is part of a broad based movement to build healthy neighborhoods. PNV has embraced urban farming and community engagement as our primary tools to improve food access, food security, and environmental wellness. We use a social determinant of health model which views food equity and self-determination as key factors for achieving better health.

We’re proud to announce our new monthly podcast series PROJECT: Good Food, a podcast about community liberation through food access, food sovereignty, and the relationship we have with the environment.
Hosted by Anthony Avalos and co-host N. Diane Moss, our first episode is a special one - we look at the history of Project New Village and the impact and legacy of Robert Tambuzi, an activist and community leader who helped shape the vision and principles of Project New Village. August 10th marked what would have been his 71st birthday, so we’re very happy to release this episode as a tribute to his legacy. We were joined in this episode by special guests Kamaal Martin and Eric Henson, who both shared a close connection with Tambuzi as well as PNV.

To listen, visit the PROJECT: Good Food link in our bio (https://projectnewvillage.org/project-good-food-podcast/), or stream on your podcast platform of choice.

One of the major components of this year’s Health & Healing Summerfest event is environmental justice, and we want to highlight some of the vendors who are doing wonderful work in the community by creating more green spaces, building community climate resilience through renewable energy sources, and giving support and resource tools to community members who want to participate in shaping our hyper-local food landscape.

Plus, we’ll be hosting a panel discussion at the event, “Contributing to Planet Wellness”, which will feature a discussion on climate change and the SD Climate Action Plan, plus the benefits of solar power and renewable energy with Clovis Honoré from Grid Alternatives.

Join us in celebrating environmental justice at the Health & Healing Summerfest on Saturday, August 24 from 9am to 1pm at the Educational Cultural Complex - free event, open to all but to receive a free swag bag full of goodies and lunch from Fresheria make sure you register in advance (link in bio, or visit https://projectnewvillage.org for more information).

Exciting new way to give direct support to SESD residents facing food insecurity - we’re launching the Community Chest charitable fund, supporting our popular $10 People’s Produce food coupons available at our mobile farmers markets.

For many of our customers these coupons provide a vital lifeline in affording local nutritious food, and allows us to continue our equitable model of paying fair price to local farmers in order to support ethically-grown, sustainably-farmed local produce. This model not only ensures the freshest, most nutrient-dense produce to improve the wellness of our local customers, but it’s also better for our environment while supporting our local economy.

We’re calling upon our community members who can to help us contribute to the greater good. The Community Chest charitable fund is neighbors helping neighbors and local organizations supporting the wellness of their communities. It’s a direct donation that goes to family in need - for every $10 donated, a $10 food coupon can be given to a People’s Produce customer to help with their food cost. To learn how to support this valuable community resource, go to the link in our bio or visit https://projectnewvillage.org/community-chest/.
