Cardinal Robert Walter McElroy presided over USD's Mass of the Holy Spirit Thursday afternoon in The Immaculata. McElroy, the bishop of San Diego, gave a powerful homily about the dangers of marginalization and encouraged the USD community to always seek to look beyond the peripheries.

The University of San Diego honored the heroes and victims of 9/11 with its annual September 11 Memorial on Wednesday morning in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Theatre. The ceremony included interfaith prayers for peace, the playing of “Taps,” a rendition of “Amazing Grace” by Tresurea Nelson, USN, Ret., a performance of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” by USD students Carly O’Rear and Elliot Hayes and remarks from City of San Diego Fire Captain Brandt Truver.

“No amount of gratitude can completely heal the wounds that were created on September 11th, but it’s my sincere hope that we, and our next generation, never forget the sacrifice that was made that day,” Truver said.

Cuddles in between classes! 🥰 🐶 🐕 Therapy dogs were a highlight at this year's Be Well Fair, which offered students a variety of activities to unwind after the start of the academic year. It's a great opportunity for Toreros to decompress a bit, enjoy hanging out with some furry friends and get connected to the wellness community at USD!

It’s time to pack like a pro and make your dorm feel like home! 🏠

Yesterday, we shared a packing list in our Instagram Story. If you missed it, you can find it under our OLÉ! Weekend Highlight. You can also check out this list below👇

🔹Bedding: Twin XL sheets, pillow, comforter and mattress pad.

🔹Personal Care: Toiletries, makeup, shower caddy (aka your new best friend), shower shoes, towels and a laundry basket (this would also be a good time to learn how to do laundry so you don’t turn your whites — uh, pink 😳).

🔹Clothing: Seasonal clothes, hangers, steamer (because no one likes wrinkled clothes), a variety of shoes (walking, flip flops for the beach, business attire, etc.).

🔹Study Essentials: Laptop, notebooks, pens and a small desk lamp

🔹Room Basics: Command hooks (no nails in the wall!), storage bins and a small fan (pro tip: get your fan going first and then continue to move and unpack everything else on move-in day!).

🔹Tech: Chargers, power strip and headphones (for all your study jams).

🔹Decor: Have fun with photos, posters, throw blankets and more to make your dorm feel more cozy!

What items would you recommend our first-year students bring?

08/05/2024

President Harris Shares His Perspective on the Camino de Santiago - University of San Diego 08/02/2024

University of San Diego President James T. Harris III, DEd, writes a blog called “President Harris’ Perspective,” where he shares his thoughts on life as a Torero and lessons he’s learning as the leader of the university. Earlier this summer, Harris penned several blog entries providing personal accounts of his second pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago.

“Probably my biggest takeaway has been that creating a sense of community is still possible, even within a diverse group of people who don’t know each other well,” Harris wrote. “However, it doesn’t come easy and requires work. First, having a common mission or common goal matters.”

Cheers to the 2024 USD Wine Classic! Thanks to your support, the Alumni Veteran Fund will be endowed! 🍇 🍷 ✨

On July 13, 700 Torero supporters gathered at the beautiful Garden of the Sea at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice for an afternoon of wine tasting, gourmet food, live music and auctions.

The funds raised at Wine Classic will support a new scholarship for military veteran students, helping them pursue their educational and career dreams. Nelson Chase '08 (BA), '12 (MA), Director of USD Military and Veterans Program, shared the impact of these scholarships: "Having scholarships available to support student veterans is very important. Opportunities such as the Wine Classic, Founders Gala and others to raise funds and help student veterans in need aren't just for the student, but their family, too.”

The Alumni Veterans Network, founded in 2015, serves over 4,000 USD veteran alumni and aims to make USD a top destination for veterans seeking education, resources and fellowship.
