We are pleased that STATESIDE, our new luxury student housing community near San Diego State University, opened its doors as scheduled on August 19th, despite 2023’s near record rainfall. We’re talking historic levels of rainfall, almost 60 percent above our annual average. That kind of weather wreaks havoc on construction schedules and causes a lot of anxiety. Imagine our relief, being able to open the doors on time and welcome students the day before Tropical Storm Hilary hit. Other area student housing projects scheduled for completion this fall were held up by the weather, leaving more than 1,500 students scrambling to find a place to live before school started.
Thanks to Campus Life & Style, STATESIDE was 100% leased months before opening. We can’t express enough gratitude to their team, and all the seasoned professionals behind STATESIDE, including our subcontractors, South Coast Interior Design, the City of San Diego, all the folks at SDSU, and especially the students and parents who chose to move into STATESIDE. They trusted us to deliver an extraordinary place to live, study and socialize, and we delivered! Finally, STATESIDE wouldn’t be possible without Keith Henderson. We are grateful for his enthusiasm, commitment and excellent leadership.

It’s gratifying to see the vision of a project come into fruition. After a year of planning, the renovation of NC18 APARTMENTS in National City is coming along nicely.
The property is getting much more than a fresh coat of paint. From top-to-bottom, inside and out, each unit will be fully renovated and smartly refurbished.

Next Space Development team member, Scott Feraco, is working on the branding for Fourth and Laurel, our multifamily project currently under construction in Bankers Hill. The other day Scott got back from a site visit and said the scaffolding screen covering the building reminded him of a Christo art piece. He explained that the artist is noted for large-scale, site-specific environmental installations, often large landmarks and landscape elements wrapped in fabric. We asked why Christo wrapped buildings? Scott explained he "appropriated" everyday objects. By putting them under wraps, he aimed to preserve them permanently for posterity. We went online and checked out the artwork… It's awesome!
It may not be a national treasure like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, but Fourth and Laurel is going to be a magnificent building. If Christo and Jeanne-Claude were alive today, we’d invite them on a site visit. LOL.

Congratulations to San Diego State men’s basketball team! They beat Creighton 57-56 in a thriller on Saturday, earning the school’s first-ever trip to the NCAA Final Four. GO AZTECS!
STATESIDE, our student housing project at SDSU is just an 11 minute walk to Jeff Jacobs JAM Center, the Aztecs practice facility. We’re inviting all the players to become STATESIDERS. Heck, we’ll make sure each room comes with a basketball hoop trash can to help them keep making clutch free throws! LOL

We’re in process of applying stucco at StateSide, our student housing project at SDSU. Stucco has a timeless appeal, but it’s so much more. It is waterproof, long-lasting, easy to maintain and energy efficiency. It’s also a sustainable material that can be made from recycled materials. It looks as good by itself as it does in combination with other siding materials. Stucco is challenging to apply. A successful job depends on meticulous preparation of the substrate, as well as application skills that take practice and experience.
When developing an apartment multifamily property, whether from the ground-up, or a renovation, it’s important to communicate as early as possible with potential future residents.
We recently met with signage experts, Andrew and Jacob from MSI for NC18 Apartments in National City, and Stephen and Tony with STANFORD for Fourth and Laurel in Bankers Hill.
It was delayed by the rainy weather, but last week we installed a large banner at StateSide, our Student Housing project at SDSU.
