Apologies, the HVAC system in our office building has been repaired, but unfortunately was not as effective today as we had hoped.
Update: Our physical offices will reopen on Friday, August 23rd!
ATTENTION: Due to an ongoing A/C outage, SDCERS' physical downtown offices will be closed until the problem is resolved. However, SDCERS staff continues to work remotely at this time.

Don't forget to keep your beneficiaries updated! Major life events, such as the birth of a child, marriage, divorce, or a death in the family, should prompt you to check your beneficiary designations and ensure they are current. You can update your beneficiaries directly through your Member Portal account, linked below. The only beneficiary designation you CANNOT change, is your continuance beneficiary (applicable to active DROP participants and retirees only).
Attention if you are Medicare-eligible, and especially if you are currently enrolled in a Medicare plan! Please read the article linked below - we don't want anyone else to have this experience!
Are you debating about when to retire or enter DROP? Take a look at the article linked below for some helpful guidance on all of the considerations you should take into account before deciding! (It's an oldie but a goodie!)
SDCERS - Things to Consider Before Deciding When to Retire (or Enter DROP) A common question we get from our members is, “when should I retire/enter DROP?” Unfortunately, this is a question we cannot answer for you. What we can do is point out certain factors you should take into account when making this decision for yourself, but ultimately, it is a decision you must ...
Please join us in welcoming our new Board President!
As promised, SDCERS' Board approved the FY 2025 COLA at Friday's meeting - see the article linked below for more information!
Next Friday, SDCERS' Board of Administration will approve the FY 2025 cost of living adjustment ("COLA"), which will apply to all pension benefits of those who are retired or participating in DROP as of June 30, 2024. Stay tuned! We will post an article on the front page of our website regarding this topic by the end of the day on Friday, May 10, 2024.
Note: You can also sign up to receive an email notification when agendas and meeting materials are posted online:
CITY RETIREES: Please don't forget - if you need to come into our downtown offices for any reason regarding retiree healthcare, you must come in on a Tuesday or Thursday only. We recommend calling ahead to confirm that our retiree health staff member is in the office.
The Benefit Estimate Calculator, found on active members' Portal accounts, is arguably the most important retirement planning tool SDCERS offers. See our fact sheet below for help using your calculator!

Don't forget to check your beneficiary designations at least once a year and ensure they stay updated!
Are you considering retiring or entering DROP soon, but unsure if you should wait until Fiscal Year 2025 (beginning July 1, 2024)? See the article linked below:
If you're going through a divorce, or if you are already divorced, please review the information on our "Divorce & Community Property" page for guidance regarding how a divorce can affect your pension and/or DROP account. Also, don't forget that if SDCERS has been joined to your dissolution proceedings, you will not be able to retire or enter DROP until we are either dismissed or have received a finalized Domestic Relations Order (DRO)!
Happy Friday! All of our members should be receiving our 2024 Winter Newsletter in the mail soon, but if you can't wait for the mailman, you can see it here:

Don't forget that you can sign up to receive an email notification every time we publish a newsletter! (https://www.sdcers.org/Newsletter-signup/Newsletter-subscription.aspx)
Valentine's Day is upon us! Don't forget that big life changes (like marriage or divorce) should prompt you to update your SDCERS beneficiary designations.
Also, remember that in order to select Maximum Benefit (Married) - the only option that allows you to leave a 50% continuance benefit to your spouse or registered domestic partner WITHOUT requiring a reduction to your pension benefit - you must be legally married or in a registered domestic partnership with your designated continuance beneficiary on your retirement or DROP entry date.
So don't be afraid to feel the love and pop the question!
Thinking about retiring or entering DROP, but not sure when you should do it? Check out this article before you make your decision:
SDCERS - Considerations Before Deciding When to Enter/Exit DROP City Members hired before July 1, 2005; Port Members hired before October 1, 2005; and Airport Members hired before October 2, 2006 have the option to participate in the Deferred Retirement Option Plan (“DROP”) when they become age and service eligible to retire. It's a strange day at SDCERS, as this is our first work day in many years without Marcelle Voorhies Rossman as our Deputy CEO, as she officially retired on Friday. Most of SDCERS' current staff has worked with Marcelle their entire career at SDCERS, and she will be greatly missed. That being said, please join us in wishing her a very happy retirement!

Happy birthday SDCERS! Section 24.0101 of the San Diego Municipal Code says SDCERS was created and established on November 29, 1926, which means today, we are 97 years young. Cheers to 97 years of pension benefit administration and many more to come!
SDCERS presented its 2023 Annual Membership Meeting a few weeks ago - the theme was "We nurture the seeds of retirement so you can enjoy the harvest." In case you missed it, you can watch the recording here!

The November meeting is also arguably the most exciting for our active DROP participants because of the Board's vote approving the following year's DROP account and DROP annuity interest rates! Effective January 1, 2024, the DROP account rate will increase to 4.2% and the DROP annuity interest rate will increase to 4.6%. Please see the article linked below for more information as well as links to register for the November DROP Entry and DROP Exit webinars:
Every year, the Board's November meeting is arguably the most exciting for our retired members (rivaled only by the May meeting, when the COLA is approved) due to the Board's vote regarding the Annual Supplemental Benefit. We are pleased to announce that the Board voted today to approve payment of the Annual Supplemental Benefit (and by default, the Corbett Settlement Increase) to all eligible retirees for 2023. If you are eligible for one or both of these payments, the addition will be included in your November 2023 pension benefit payment.
