Stop into Girard Gourmet to see Sibyl Rubottom’s solo show, 𝘛𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘪 𝘍𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘪 🍒🍐

“I made these two paintings for Girard Gourmet, to honor François and Diana Goedhuys. For over 30 years they have served our community with fresh ingredients (many from their farm in Julian) and unparalleled delight and artistry.

Originally, I planned a third painting to accompany these two. My timetable was altered because in early September I suffered a hip fracture that put me in a wheelchair. Instead, I include a seldom-seen painting I made 30 years ago: Return from New York, made about the time Girard Gourmet first opened.

Athenaeum Jazz at Scripps Research!

The fall jazz series continues on Sunday, December 10, with Trinidad-born trumpeter-percussionist-composer Etienne Charles, who made his Athenaeum debut in 2018. He returns with his sextet to perform a 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘴 program for the holiday season. Hailed by the New York Times as “an auteur” and by 𝘑𝘢𝘻𝘻 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 as “a daring improviser who delivers with heart-wrenching lyricism,” according to 𝘋𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘉𝘦𝘢𝘵, “Charles delivers his ebullient improvisations with the elegance of a world-class ballet dancer.”

He has received critical acclaim for his exciting performances, thrilling compositions, and knack for connecting with audiences worldwide. In October 2022 he had the singular honor of composing and performing San Juan Hill, an original piece for jazz sextet and the New York Philharmonic for the opening night of the newly renovated Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center.

A string trio with four instruments? A harpsichord hiding behind the cello? The Valencia Baryton Project has dedicated itself to the performance of music written for an ancient and little-known instrument, the baryton. A cross between the viol da gamba and 𝘭𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘦 (or lira da gamba), with 10 resonating and plucked strings down the back of the instrument, the baryton gives the traditional string trio an entirely new dimension. This unique group was originally scheduled to visit our series in 2022 and will bring a fresh program of old and new works sure to delight.

Inspired by the blue cast of twilight, Anne Labovitz uses light and its profound meanings in various contexts as the central construct of The Blue Hour. Small libraries, illuminated windows, and Tyvek sculptures explore physical and metaphorical luminosity, color, and materiality, inviting visitors to experience serenity and emergent energy. Labovitz aims to respond to today’s world by challenging isolation, loneliness, and disconnection through activating color and light in large-scale works. “Light and color are connected and are central tenets in my artistic practice and are often what engages viewers at first glance,” she says. “In a world that can be dark, there is something undeniably captivating about the allure of light. But what does it mean for something to be luminous? Luminosity, at its core, is the quality of radiating or reflecting light. These works were created specifically for the Athenaeum to provide viewers a moment of pause, contemplation, and awe.” Local context and creating connections with others are elements embodied in the artist’s creative process and public interventions.

Labovitz received a BA in art and psychology, with a minor in art education and art history, from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, and an MFA from Transart, Plymouth University, in New York City and Berlin. She has an extensive national and international exhibition history. Upcoming and current projects include solo exhibitions at the Minnesota State Capitol (2024); 122 Conversations: Person to Person, Art Beyond Borders at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport; and the I Love You Institute.

Artist talk with Jean Lowe on November 14!

The Athenaeum and Murals of La Jolla present Jean Lowe, with a special presentation of her career, process, recent projects, and 2015 mural Tear Stains Be Gone for Murals of La Jolla. San Diego-based multimedia artist Lowe will unpack some of the humor, social critique, and rage that is threaded through her work regardless of form—with an emphasis on new video pieces made in collaboration with Lile Kvantaliani. These short skits borrow from reality shows such as Selling Sunset, Love is Blind, and cooking shows. She will be debuting her video episode Love is Blind: Boomer Edition as a part of her lecture, along with a variety of other unrelated short skits, situated within her overarching oeuvre. Join us for an elegant and erudite evening of thought and conversation. (Note: presentation may contain sexual innuendo, foul language, and smoking.)

Lowe’s mural for Murals of La Jolla, Tear Stains Be Gone, was on view from 2015 to 2020 at 7661 Girard Avenue. What at first glance looks like a billboard advertisement is actually Lowe taking a stance on societal norms and commercial advertising. In line with her signature blend of humor and cultural critique, Lowe speaks to her mural, “I'm just playing with the idea that you can buy something that's going to make you feel better or transform your life. Spoofing advertising signage is an organic way to drop an image into urban fabric”.

Last performance of the 15th anniversary series of Acoustic Evenings with Jefferson Jay is on Friday, November 10! This special bonus show will feature Marie Haddad, Israel Maldonado, Jimmy Patton & Enrique Platas.

Singer Marie Haddad has a songwriting and piano style that has been described as “somewhere between Kate Bush and Leonard Cohen” (San Diego Downtown News). Her music has been featured on national television and in several independent films; she performs regularly in San Diego and nationally.

Israel Maldonado has been performing in and around Southern California for more than 25 years. His performances include education, entertainment, and a humble warmth that delights Athenaeum audiences every time. Trained in classical guitar from a young age, he performs a blend of Latin and pop music.

Guitarist Jimmy Patton and percussionist Enrique Platas incorporate flamenco, Middle Eastern, salsa, calypso, Brazilian, and other world rhythms into their music. Listeners experience virtuosic guitar passages accompanied by exotic percussive rhythms producing a fiery sound.

Last lecture of Cornelia Feye’s contemporary art trends series is this Thursday! Join us for a discussion on the trends for the time period of the 2000s–present.

It is hard to predict which art movements of the 21st century will have a lasting effect, since we are only 23 years into the century. But here are a few examples of the lecturer’s favorites in this global community of artists, who use any medium imaginable and explore universal or societal issues. Ai Weiwei (China), who lives in Lisbon and Berlin, uses any medium, including social media and augmented reality, to make political statements. El Anatsui (Ghana) uses bottlecaps to create regal environmental art. Cai Guo-Qiang (China) incorporates fireworks into his work. Olafur Eliasson (Iceland) works with Ice, light, and water. P***y Riot (Russia) is a group of performance artists and punk rockers. Australian painter Barbara Weir and Kay Walking Stick are Indigenous artists expressing their culture through their art. African American artist Kara Walker works with sugar and paper cut-outs; Tara Donovan uses everyday objects. British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor, South African artist William Kentridge, and Polish-German artist Alicja Kwade are also examples of influential international 21st century artists.

We’re excited to announce the latest painted mural by Michael Mercil! Mercil’s mural, 𝑨𝑹𝑻 𝑰𝑺 𝑮𝑶𝑶𝑫 𝑭𝑶𝑹 𝒀𝑶𝑼, entreats the embrace of the arts, both in its creation and consumption. Painted directly on-site, this lively imperative reminds the viewer of the importance of art as a crucial and ubiquitous aspect of daily life. Taking inspiration from the playful messaging found inside the box cover of Atomic Fireball candies, which reads "Candy is good for you. Eat some every day,” Mercil recontextualizes this cheeky reference, bringing the same level of panache and good humor into a public art setting.

Comprised of a complementary color palette, orange capital letters outlined in red boldly pop out as the text runs horizontally across a placid blue background. Using text as a creative tool, Mercil inspires the viewer to appreciate the holistic benefits of a daily infusion of art as an integral aspect of our collective humanity. He expertly weaves his artful message into the surrounding environment, bringing a compelling and colorful belief in the benefits of art into the realm of everyday relatability.

The 15th anniversary series of Acoustic Evenings continues on Friday, October 27! The Athenaeum and Acoustic Evenings originator and presenter Jefferson Jay are celebrating 15 years by recognizing the Athenaeum’s history of leadership by women with a series of concerts driven by women with world-class talent 🎵

🔸Friday, October 27, features Jefferson Jay, Hugh Gaskins, & Gaby Aparicio.

Jefferson Jay will be performing a tribute to Don Truesdail. The late singer-songwriter Truesdail, who had a profound impact on other musicians, played at the Athenaeum’s first Acoustic Evenings series on October 27, 2008. As a tribute to this great man and his music in our 15th anniversary season, his close friend Jay will share his songs.

Hugh Gaskins, who performed in our debut series in 2008 and has encored in the last 15 years, plays multiple instruments in a powerful fusion of blues, rockabilly, and mountain music along with influences from gospel, Elvis, John Lee Ho**er, Robert Johnson, and Big Joe Williams.

Singer-songwriter Gaby Aparicio is inspired by her coastal Uruguayan and Italian family roots. She performs her signature fusion of Latin, world, pop, reggae, and soul with various configurations of her band, La Buena Onda, at venues and festivals, such as the Music Box and Adams Avenue Unplugged.

Acoustics — Athenaeum Music & Arts Library — Athenaeum Music & Arts Library Acoustic Evenings at the Athenaeum showcases some of the finest acoustic musicians in San Diego. Three acts fill each program and attentive audiences delight in the intimacy of the unplugged storytelling format. Refreshments are available at the intermission reception and post-concert meet-and-greet

Contemporary art trends of the 1980s and 1990s 🎉 The art history lecture this Thursday, October 26, at 7:30 PM, will discuss these two decades of creators and art. The feminist art of Judy Chicago began in the 1970s and continued with Barbara Kruger, the Guerilla Girls, Kiki Smith, and Alexis Smith in the 1980s. The Pattern and Decoration movement, inspired by traditional fabric and fiber crafts, thrived in California and New York with artists like Miriam Shapiro, Faith Ringgold, Kim MacConnel, and Robert Kushner.

In the era of post-modernism, artists appropriated aspects of previous art movements into their work. Examples are Cindy Sherman, and Neo-Expressionists like Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, A. R. Penck, Jörg Immendorf, Sigmar Polke, and Julian Schnabel. Street artists, like Banksy, Kenny Scharf, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring, made their statements on public buildings.

Environmental artist Andy Goldworthy, Maya Lin, Wolfgang Laib, and Yayoi Kusama worked with organic material to create impermanent art. Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst had their sculptures manufactured.

The Athenaeum and Acoustic Evenings originator and presenter Jefferson Jay are celebrating 15 years by recognizing the Athenaeum’s history of leadership by women with a series of concerts driven by women with world-class talent 🎵

🔷Friday, October 20, features Sue Palmer & Liz Ajuzie, Jack Tempchin, and Lisa Sanders.

Sue Palmer aka the Queen of Boogie Woogie, Sultana of Swing, and Lady Who Skates on the 88s, has amazed audiences all over the world with her unique style and phenomenal left hand for over 30 years. She has won numerous San Diego Music Awards and had a day named after her by the city in 2008. Vocalist Liz Ajuzie is a jazz and blues singer and is a big fan of 40s jazz.

Singer-guitarist-keyboardist Jack Tempchin is a legendary writer of hit songs, including “Peaceful Easy Feeling” recorded by the Eagles. He has toured extensively as a solo artist over the years, opening for Ringo Starr, Jackson Browne, Dolly Parton, and Emmylou Harris, to name a few.

Singer-songwriter Lisa Sanders has a musical style that can only be described as a soulful country blues; her genres include folk pop, gospel, rock and jazz. Sanders has worked with musical legends including the Truckee Brothers, Lucinda Williams, Bonnie Raitt, Al Green, BB King, and Babyface.

Contemporary art trends of the 1970s! The art history lecture this Thursday, October 19, at 7:30 PM, will discuss this decade of creators and art. The installation art of Ed Kienholz, Eva Hesse, and others expanded into immersive life size environments, while the performance art of Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramovich, and Allan Kaprow incorporated the participation of the viewer into live happenings. Beuys was also a member of the Fluxus group with video artist Nam June Paik and others.

The Light and Space movement, represented by Dan Flavin, James Turell, Robert Irwin, John McLaughlin, Larry Bell, Peter Alexander, John McCracken, DeWain Valentine, was a West Coast art movement inspired by the California sun and the wide-open spaces. The Earth/site Art of Walter de Maria, Michael Heizer, Robert Smithson, and Robert Long moved art out of the gallery space and into the open landscape. The Conceptual artists Joseph Kosuth, John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha, Bruce Nauman, and Jenny Holzer placed prime importance on words and ideas.

At San Diego Book Arts upcoming October Monthly Meeting, Sol Rebora will be introduced to our community, while teaching about the many uses of stubs in bookbinding. She will present this technical element of book arts and explain how and when to use stubs, showing a variety of examples. She will share an article addressing these ideas. She will also share about her husband's precision toolmaking. In February of 2024 this Award-Winning International Book Artist will be teaching two in-person classes for the Athenaeum & San Diego Book Arts.
