At our office, D I A B E T I C R E T I N O P A T H Y is the most common complication we see in the back of the eye.

In the early stages, due to the lack of symptoms, most people are unaware they have the condition until they visit an eye doctor. If not treated, diabetic retinopathy can lead to vision loss or even blindness.

We take retinal photos and imaging of all of our “pre-diabetic” or diabetic patients. We truly believe that using imaging helps with more careful diagnosis and findings of retinal complications or swelling.

If diabetic retinopathy is detected, we carefully continue monitoring the patient or refer them to a retinal specialist where laser treatments and/or injections are used for treatment or to prevent further damage and or vision loss.

Diabetes is more common among Hispanic, African-American and Asian Americans. It is also more common in those with a family history of diabetes. It is important to get screened for annual blood work to detect for diabetes.

It is also important to follow your doctors recommendations for medications as well add

*in some cases weight loss to help with diabetes control or prevention.
