SORRY I MISSED YOUR SHOW

This series features informal and intimate conversations using archival media to reflect on past performances by Bay Area artists that have left a lasting impact on our performance community. Often, artists and fans find themselves saying, “Sorry I missed your show!” This series aims to revive those memorable performances, capturing their political and artistic significance from a specific era, space, and time.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity for an intimate conversation with Joanna Haigood as she reflects on her seminal work, Invisible Wings.

Invisible Wings (1998)

This powerful site-specific work was created by choreographer Joanna Haigood, artistic director of Zaccho Dance Theatre, during several Jacob’s Pillow residencies in Massachusetts, inspired by the Pillow site’s history as a stop on the Underground Railroad for enslaved people escaping to freedom. Haigood works often involve in-depth research into the background and character of historic sites. Her collaborators on Invisible Wings included composer/arranger Linda Tillery and composer/sound designer Lauren Weinger. Storyteller Diane Ferlatte.

October 11-20, 204 at Dance Mission Theater
Fri-Sat 8pm, Sun 3pm

EARLY BIRD TICKETS ON-SALE THROUGH AUG 12 (link in bio)

Directed by Susana Arenas Pedroso and Bongo Sidibe, with dancers and musicians from Arenas Dance and Duniya Dance and Drum Companies,“Raíces et Résistance” (or “Roots and Resistance” in Spanish/French) explores the vibrant, layered, and largely unknown social-political relationship between Guinea, West Africa and Cuba, forged by the transatlantic slave trade as well as the post-colonial cultural exchange that began in the 60s. Bringing together their cultural expertises, their passion, their senses of joy and justice, Pedroso and Sidibe have created a unique performance built on storytelling and cultural collaboration. “Raices et Résistance” embodies the past as well as the present, a story of Black people defining themselves through dance and music, during and after the traumas of slavery and Neo-colonization.

Dance Mission Theater presents Adia Tamar Whitaker’s
“Following the Road to Ose Tura” Aug 15-18, 2024 at various location throughout San Francisco.

Every child must go and come….

On August 6, 2020, Efeya Ifadayo Olaberinjo Makala Sampson a Brooklyn native, Ifa priestess, dancer, choreographer, scholar, educator, folklorist, and beloved member of Àṣẹ Dance Theater transitioned into the ancestral realm. Before she made her transition, she created the beginning of a dance film called The Road to Ose Tura. As Efeya got closer to transitioning, she sent Whitaker and dance family members videos of the movement she was dreaming into life and charged them with the task of finishing the film, as she was able to complete it in her human form.

Adia Tamar Whitaker’s Following The Road to Ose Tura is a dance and music response to The Road to Ose Tura. It is the landing pad for Whitaker’s rumination’s on facing her own mortality and the immortality of her friend. It is the container of Adia’s reflections while realizing Efeya’s films, navigating grief, loss, survivor’s guilt, and the memories of the inequities Adia and Efeya experienced while interacting with healthcare system live.

Following The Road to Ose Tura isa four-chaptered, site-specific, ritual dance theater performance featuring Whitaker’s choreography, including film projections of Sampson’s work. It is a series of four different ritual dance theater experiences in three different locations over four days. The first three days feature three different 30 minute performance rituals that repeat three times each day. The fourth day features the evening length finale.
