An institution in San Francisco for 116 years, standing as the oldest steakhouse in the city.
Today in 1941, ‘The Maltese Falcon’ premiered in New York City. This film, which still represents the essence of ‘film noir,’ set first-time director John Huston on the path to great directing success and set first-time leading man Humphrey Bogart, a close friend of Huston’s, on the path to becoming a cultural icon. In the novel, Sam Spade, Hammett’s iconic shamus, stops at John’s Grill and orders “chops, baked potatoes, sliced tomatoes.” That was enough to get John’s named a national literary landmark by the Friends of the Library USA, complete with a plaque over the door. When the U.S. Postal Service put out a Humphrey Bogart commemorative stamp in 2007, officials unveiled it at the restaurant.

Outside John’s Grill on Ellis Street, former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown feigned shock to find reporters from several local outlets with cameras.
“Who are you people? What are you doing here?” Brown joked.
When a reporter told him that it was because he was popular, Brown said, “You think so? Then I’m announcing my candidacy …”
The Mayor for Life and one-time Kamala Harris paramour followed with a perfectly timed rejoinder: “No! I will never be second! Not only that, you know I’m too old. They got rid of the old guy!”

“[A stadium] would make the Downtown area complete,” he said. “You’d have an entertainment venue space with all the restaurants, bars and shops in the area. Think about 25,000 people in the area and what it would do for business.”
