A DC developer trashed 37,000 Black gravestones. Here’s how they ended up in the Potomac River 02/11/2022

For 100 years, the Columbian Harmony Cemetery in Washington, D.C., was the final resting place for almost 40,000 African Americans, including Black Union soldiers, a seamstress for Abraham Lincoln, educators, and civic and business leaders.

In 1960, the land was sold. The African American decedents were relocated to a cemetery in Maryland. But their tombstones were left behind and, tragically, used to prevent erosion along the shoreline of the Potomac River.

Four years ago, Virginia Senator Richard Stuart and his wife were exploring property they had recently acquired, and stumbled upon the forgotten tombstones, many of which were clearly marked with legible names. Thus began a project, involving the states of Virginia and Maryland, as well as Washington, D.C., nonprofit organizations and National Harmony Cemetery, a proud Dignity Memorial provider, to relocate as many tombstones as possible to the final resting places where they belong.
