Cinnamon has been known from antiquity. Cinnamon was so highly prized among ancient nations that it was regarded as a gift fit for monarchs and even for a god. Through the Middle Ages, the source of cinnamon was a mystery to the Western world. In the Mediterranean world, for centuries the source was kept secret by the middlemen who handled the spice trade to protect their monopoly as suppliers.

The French "Yule Log" is a traditional dessert served during Christmas. The original Yule log recipe emerged during the 19th century. Yule logs are often served with one end cut off and set atop the cake, or protruding from its side to resemble a chopped off branch.
The name bûche de Noël originally referred to the Yule log itself, and was transferred to the dessert only after the custom had fallen out of use, presumably during the first half of the 20th century. By 1945 it referred to the cake.
