In November 2019, police and students violently clashed at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This was a direct response to the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement, during which a series of protests against the bill's introduction led to numerous skirmishes throughout Hong Kong. The clash remains a significant moment for Hong Kong’s young intellectuals, particularly those who value freedom of speech.

This piece by Koon Wai B**g depicts fire and tear gas by using a light installation paired with neutral tones and serves as a reminder of the chaos involving students, parents, government officials, and law enforcement.

🗓️ There's only 2 weeks left to experience this powerful work and read the full English translated inscription at “Into View: New Voices, New Stories.” On view through Monday, Aug. 5.

Over the moon for elegant moon jars. 🌕

Produced for under 200 years from the late 17th to early 19th century, moon jars were prized by Joseon dynasty scholars and collectors for their simplicity and elegance. Only about 30 moon jars from this era survive globally, highlighting their significance in Korean art.

Due to its size, moon jars are distinctive for their unique construction—which consists of joining separately shaped upper and lower halves. Along with varying shades of blueish-whites and more translucent whites, each jar is truly unique. This particular moon jar is renowned for its wider and rounder form compared to others of its kind.

🇰🇷 Enjoy a contemplative moment admiring this masterpiece in the collection galleries for Moon Day tomorrow and to brush up on Korean art and culture ahead of our fall exhibition “Hallyu: The Korean Wave.”

See the new archeological discoveries that have significantly changed our understanding of early Chinese art and culture! 💡 Technologically and artistically far more advanced than scholars had previously assumed, these southern kingdoms are now arguably the largest and most resource-rich state of its time.

"Stunning mythical artworks." —

Found in the ancient tombs of Zeng and Chu aristocrats, many pieces on view at "Phoenix Kingdoms" incorporate spiritually significant animals and creatures. These fantastical beasts reflect the deep spirituality and beliefs of the Yangzi River Valley states. For instance, snake-like dragons were regarded as powerful keepers of waters, while phoenixes and mythical birds represented harmony.

💛 There's less than 10 days left to claim our AAPI Heritage Month gift to you! Visitors 17 & under can see "Phoenix Kingdoms" for FREE through May 31.

😎❓

San Francisco-based photographer Michael Jang has been pushing the limits of photography since the 1970s. Using a snapshot style, he was influenced by the spontaneity of street photographers.

In this rare self-portrait taken in 1973, Jang appears in a black suit and shades in San Francisco’s Financial District. For this 2019 piece, Jang collaborated with Barry McGee, a graffiti artist and a pioneer of San Francisco’s Mission School art movement, to spray paint “Are you ok?” in red. Looking back at this vintage photograph forty-six years later, McGee’s question turned into a prophecy the following year amid the pandemic. The result is a new work, a work of time-based media.

At "Into View: New Voices, New Stories," see Jang's work and then learn more about the artist and the concepts that inspired the exhibition with a selection of books.

💛 ✨ And it was all yellow 🍌 🌕

Jiha Moon does not shy away from jumbling up recognizable images with a twist of humor. She unapologetically takes cues from folk art, shamanism, and pop culture, and carefully juxtaposes them to create her own visual language that speaks to the immigrant experience.

Here, a monstrous creature evocative of a Korean tiger or a Foo dog is adorned with banana hair and lemon horns. Below the figure appears the word “yellow,” and a closer look reveals that each letter is written in a calligraphic style, incorporating Hangul, the Korean alphabet. Apart from pointing to artists like Andy Warhol, the color yellow and the image of the banana also imply xenophobic slurs against Asians and Asian Americans.

See this ceramic work and Moon’s other pieces at “Into View: New Voices, New Stories.”
