Ghost Palace

Celebrating Halloween with exquisitely curated music & artist experiences from across the Bay Area!

Behold LoveBoat Halloween, celebrating a decade of San Francisco's legendary Ghost Ship Halloween. This amazing event has become the Bay Area’s most unique Halloween arts & music experience. The event features multiple sound-systems thumping with Bay Area’s talented DJ’s, dozens of renown art installations and beloved art cars — filling the historic Treasure Island Hangars and now San Francisco Pier 70 for costumed party-goers to explore and interact.

I don’t really post much anymore. Cept on that other site. Mainly as a different person for another cause. But…

I just want to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to my family & team at HUSHconcerts, our old friends from Non Plus Ultra and our incredible new partners Elliott C Nathan and Brett Mendenhallof Electroluxx for such an incredible effort on our Ghost Palace on Saturday.

To be honest GhostShip/LoveBoat was my favorite experience as a producer and losing it through a series of unfortunate events out of our control was heartbreaking. I NEVER imagined it would come back in any form, let alone one as beautiful, positive, artfilled, and drama-free as Ghost Palace.

I recall all those times tinkering at the exploratorium or the corporate events I DJD at the Palace of Fine Arts, or the 5 months I spent working on the Americas Cup installation there (that never came to fruition). I always dreamed of throwing a proper festival in that unique space. It is huge. It is beautiful. It is dynamic. And it is a harrowing challenge.

Thanks to the 66 DJs (yes… we had sixty six DJs) the 50+ performers and the countless artists and creators, we filled this historic space with art and music and joy and love. I can’t even really express the pride I feel for this new team and for the found family I work with at HUSH.

I’ll let other folks post the pictures and videos and frankly I’m too exhausted after 3 weeks on a couch 2000 miles from my family to go searching though galleries when I’d rather just speak from the heart.

So many people stepped out of comfort zones, took risks, allayed fears, found their best selves and worked collectively to provide a dramatically positive esoteric experience in the midst of a a global sh*tstorm. Ok it was just a party. But just because we fight for justice and empathize with those in need doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate too. It’s all I ever want for everyone else. Which is why I chose this profession.

Impresario, producer, organizer of arts…it is my chosen profession to do these things. I have now been producing dance music events of all kinds for 28 years and this one encompassed elements from every aspect of that journey.

One cogent part in particular was a constant remembrance of the late great Joegh Bullock who (among many other things) taught me how to breath stop worrying so much, and trust creators to make magic. I missed him a ton this week and hope that I am now old and wise enough to follow his sage example.

Helping those creators to do so may be the thing (other than Jess Colette Kowal and the kids) I was put on this earth to do.

Not a bad life.

Shalom.

It’s been more than 6 years since the last iteration of this amazing party, then entitled LOVEBOAT HALLOWEEN, (and before that GHOSTSHIP) at Pier 70. Much has changed in the world, and likewise we have a new venue, new artists, new producers and an incredible new venue. The FAQ’s below should help clarify some of the most common questions we are hearing. To ask more, please use our FACEBOOK EVENT ( https://www.facebook.com/events/212222698073503 ), which we will be monitoring until doors open on the 28th.

-- // FAQs for GHOST PALACE // --

WHAT IS GHOST PALACE
Ghost Palace is a Halloween extravaganza & dance party. It’s a multi-space, multi-soundsystem Halloween-themed event featuring the contributions of more than 100 musicians, djs, creative artists, producers, photographers, videographers, lighting designers, dancers, performance artists, drag queens, clowns, face painters and every other type of creative human you can imagine.

WILL THIS SELL OUT?
Our previous Halloween events typically did sell out, and this is actually a smaller venue than Pier 70 was. We encourage you to get advance tickets in advance HERE ( https://bit.ly/GP23FAQs ). Please note that ticket prices go up as levels sell out and will be most expensive at the door.

CAN I EARN A DISCOUNT/FREE TICKET?
As we always have, Ghost Palace 23 has a work-exchange program that will run from Tuesday, October 24, all the way through the night of the show. Earn a ticket by helping to build art or passing out headphones on the night of the show. Sign up HERE ( https://forms.gle/fB9K5v6WrikxHqJt6 )

IS THIS AN EVENT FOR FAMILIES & KIDS?
No. This is a 21+ event for adults. All attendees will need to show 21+ legal ID to enter. Note, that while we loved producing our ‘kids & dogs day’ events at the old venue we will not have one for 2023. If all goes well this year, we will look to bring back kids & dogs in 2024.

WHERE IS GHOST PALACE
Ghost Palace ’23 is inside the historic Palace of Fine Arts building at 3601 Lyon Street in San Francisco. Take a virtual tour of this incredible space on the venue HERE. Those of you who recall the original Exploratorium space, remember how dynamic and beautiful a canvas it will be for our creative efforts and for your effervescent joy.

HOW DO I GET THERE? – Address is: 3601 Lyon St, San Francisco 94123

RIDESHARE/TAXI – By far the safest, most reliable method.

MUNI & BUS – Check the Muni Map for the best route. Some of the closest bus lines will be the 28, the 43 and the 22. Please do your own homework.

DRIVING & PARKING – We have paid VIP-type Parking in the adjacent Presidio Lot for $40/car. There are only 100 spots available so we recommend ADVANCE PURCHASE on our HERE. There is additional street parking available but be mindful of parking signs, street cleaning etc. Make smart choices. Respect the neighbors. Don’t block driveways and please be quiet coming to and from your vehicle. DO NOT LEAVE VISIBLE ITEMS OR VALUABLES IN YOUR VEHICLE.

IS GHOST PALACE OUTDOORS BY THAT LAKE?
NO. This event takes place INSIDE the building. All sound systems and entertainment will be contained inside the space out of respect for our neighbors. We will also have an outdoor area with food trucks, smoking, and bathrooms. The Palace Theater, and the outdoor area many are familiar with (where you often see wedding photos being taken) will not be a part of this event. Trust us, we have more than enough venue. If you don’t believe us, again, take a virtual tour.

WHAT TIME IS GHOST PALACE?
Doors open at 9PM and the event ends at 4AM

WHO IS PUTTING ON THIS EVENT?
Ghost Palace 23 is being produced by three of San Francisco’s most renowned event production teams, Electroluxx, HUSHconcerts and Non Plus Ultra Inc. All three teams bring decades of experience and creativity to what will be a truly spectacular event.

IS THIS THE SAME AS THE OLD LOVEBOAT/GHOSTSHIP SHOW?
‘No’, and ‘Yes’, and ‘Maybe’ — All of the producers of Ghost Palace were involved in producing those seminal Halloween events. We are working tirelessly to make sure that favorite elements from those awesome parties will be a part of this new one. Of course, times have changed as well. Some of the original creators have moved on to other pursuits, and sadly some have even passed on (RIP Tigre Mashaal-Lively). Thankfully, the Bay Area is an endlessly evolving catalyst for artists & creativity. We have an enormous amount of new art, contributors, performers and music artists to share with you at Ghost Palace ‘23. None of our events have ever been the same, and that’s part of the fun.

WILL THERE BE LIVE SOUND AT GHOST PALACE?
YES! Our main stage will feature a glorious Meyer Sound line array system which will propel the music of our headliners, Mz Worthy, Fort Knox Five, David Harness, Provocateur etc… in the Atrum area. We will also have three other live sound areas, Candyland, The Lounge, and the Channel X Theater. Additionally, we will feature a San Francisco’ record 6-Channel (Yes, SIX!) Silent Disco on the Mezzanine using HUSHconcerts’ exclusive HUSHglow headphones (the ones Coachella uses). This means that you will be able to visit live sound areas, or go on the Mezzanine and choose between 6 different lineups of DJs. There are more than 50 music performers at this event and 7 hours to enjoy them.

WILL THERE BE BARS?
YES. With beer, wine, and cocktails throughout the venue.
NOTE THAT THESE WILL BE CASH-ONLY BARS

WILL THERE BE FREE WATER?
YES. Because we have public bathrooms in the Palace you are welcome to fill up water bottles, Camelbaks etc in the sinks. This water is direct from SFO’s Hetch-Hetchie water system, frequently lauded as some of the best public water in the world. Additionally we will be selling water in aluminum cans, which you can refill in the sinks.

WILL I NEED TO BRING CASH?
We will have multiple ATMS throughout the venue but we encourage you to bring cash to save time.

IS THERE A COAT CHECK?
Yes. We will have a coat-check/bagcheck near the main entrance.

ARE THERE REAL BATHROOMS?
YES. Unlike our previous venues, the Palace of Fine Arts has several public bathrooms. We will additionally have portalets outside to keep things… flowing.

OUR SAFETY GOALS
We want folks to have a wonderful experience, so we are asking everyone to participate in ensuring this is a safe event. We will have a seasoned security & safety team that will be working with you to make sure you can have a blast. Additionally, rangers from SF Rec & Park Dept will be on site and outside.

WHAT CAN I BRING TO GHOST PALACE?

Empty Water Bottles/Camelbaks

CLEAR (see through) Backpacks plus small purses & fannypacks

Costumes

Cash – We will have ATMS on site but who wants to wait in line?

WHAT CAN’T I BRING TO GHOST PALACE?
We will have security with metal detector wands. All bags (even small ones) will be searched. The following items will not be allowed into the venue: NON-SEE THROUGH BACKPACKS, PETS, GLASS, WEAPONS, ILLEGAL ITEMS or SUBSTANCES and ANYTHING OUR SECURITY (IN THEIR SOLE JUDGEMENT) DEEMS UNSAFE TO PATRONS. We reserve the right to refuse entry, or to es**rt you out for unsafe or disrespectful behavior.

TOTEMS / PROP SWORDS etc? — Maybe. This will be up to the sole judgement of the security team. If you get the item in, please use them safely.

GLOWSTICKS? — Glowsticks are one of the most environmentally wasteful items on the planet and we urge you not only to NOT bring them but to never purchase them again.

WATER RECEPTICLES / CAMELBACKS — Must be empty before entry. No glass please.

THIS IS A CITY VENUE — The Palace of Fine Arts is owned by the City & County of San Francisco. Park Rangers

ARE THERE INS & OUTS?
No.

WILL THERE BE A PERFORMER SCHEDULE POSTED?
Yes we will be posting the event schedule later this week on the website and Facebook Event Page. Please stand by.

WHAT IF SOMEONE CANCELS?
The Ghost Palace Lineup may be subject to change due to exigencies out of our control. We encourage you to check the website and page for updates.

HOW CAN I DO MY PART ENSURE GHOST PALACE HAPPENS AGAIN?
Great question. Our primary responsibilities are to the safety of our patrons and staff and the well-being of our neighbors. Please be mindful of your safety and the safety of others as you enjoy yourself. Take care of others. If you see people having a hard time, please find someone on the safety team and get them assistance. We believe in HARM REDUCTION and our safety and EMT teams will be focused on HELPING. Additionally, we ask that you be respectful of our neighbors, by keeping quiet as you are getting to and from the event.

WHAT IF I STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?
The best place to ask them is on the event’s page. We will do our best to answer them in a timely manner.

No one knows how to push the boundaries of House music quite like Mz Worthy. With a deeply intuitive understanding of production, she’s shown reverence to the traditional form of classic House even while tripping off the mark & sinking into euphoric, less-charted territories of booty-clapping bass.

Fort Knox Five is known for bending genres and using a broad range of musical elements in their creation of highly original dance music. Forget about tempos and genres, let Fort Knox Five take you on a musical journey that unites club music under the banners of funk, soul, jazz, hip hop & reggae.

Finally, David Harness is one of the most popular DJ/producers in the San Francisco Bay Area club scene. He has been described as ‘a man who lives, breathes and emanates everything that is beautiful about deep house music and classic garage.’ Through the years, David has evolved from ‘rising star’ to ‘jedi master’ of the Bay Area’s house scene while keeping his signature taste, energy, and smile.

To our community…

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of our decision to cancel Ghost Ship Halloween: Barco Fantasma.

All ticket buyers will be issued complete refunds for their tickets within 1 week. If you have further ticketing/refund questions, please click:
https://www.eventbrite.com/support/contact-us

Why we are cancelling:

For 10 amazing years, we have catalyzed some of the Bay Area’s greatest artistic and musical forces to create the unequaled spectacle that was Ghostship Halloween. We thrilled and inspired tens-of-thousands of people. Our commitment to the arts, community, and public safety has never been anything short of 100%. We have worked tirelessly to engage with, and support the livelihoods of hundreds of creators, musicians, DJs, and event professionals.

As you well know, the 2016 Oakland Warehouse fire took the lives of 36 people, most of whom were members of our art and music community. The fire was labeled by the media as The Ghost Ship Fire.

We were horrified to hear about this loss of life. We used our experience to educate the Bay Area and beyond. From basic event safety, to proper event permitting and emergency plans, we took time to share our expertise.

For our 10th Anniversary edition of Ghostship, to spare the families and friends of loved ones we emphasized our theme name of LoveBoat Halloween. It was a difficult season of events in October 2017, and we managed to thrill ourselves and thousands with an incredible celebration of music and art.

We struggled this year on what to call our event. After deep and thoughtful consideration, we chose to return to our original name, which we’ve had since 2008. We did so to accentuate the positive, to honor all the good that our event and our community has done, and to embolden the words GHOST SHIP to not represent tragedy, but rather art, music, community, and celebration.

We underestimated the level of pain still being felt by those in our community who have to see these words in print, online, and in their social feeds. They have made that pain very clear to us, and we have listened. We never wanted to do anything that would hurt anyone unnecessarily.

Faced with the choice of going forward and causing distress to a group of truly bereaved persons, we have chosen to cancel GHOST SHIP Halloween this year, take a breath, regroup and decide how to move forward in 2019.

We humbly apologize to those of you who made travel arrangements or plans to attend. We share your sadness because we won’t be able to enjoy the experience of building and hosting the best damn party in San Francisco. This wasn’t an easy choice but we feel it is the right one given the circumstances.

We encourage you to share your thoughts, wishes and feelings about this decision on our socials. Our community is far more important to us than any party, even one as amazing as Ghostship.

Thank you all for 10 years of incredible support.

- The Ghost Ship Halloween Team

09/28/2018

The team behind San Francisco’s Ghost Ship Halloween worked with the community in 2017 to call our event Love Boat, to soften promotions for our yearly celebration due to the tragic fire in 2016. We did what we have always done: build art, play music, spread love, and celebrate life. As of 2018, we had believed that the name itself was not important, and that time had helped heal some of the wounds of the tragic Oakland event. We wanted to associate Ghost Ship with great things, art & music instead of death & tragedy.

Many in our community have voiced their disappointment.
We were wrong.
We hear you. We are sorry. And we want to find a solution.

We will have more information in the coming days.

// Please note that Ghost Ship Halloween has no relation in any way to the tragic 2016 Oakland warehouse fire. All association between our 10-year old San Francisco event and the space sometimes referred to as “Ghost Ship” are 100% coincidental. Regardless, our family joins with all communities in empathy and solidarity with those affected by this tragedy. Our commitment to patron safety and the employment of emerging artists is unsurpassed in the Bay Area and borne out by our flawless record. Ghost Ship Halloween will honor the Oakland warehouse fire victims and families by doing what we have always done: building art and spreading love. Hopefully a little love will help. //
