We are a competitive Hawaiian outrigger canoe club that practices in the San Francisco Bay.
If you would like to try it out, please visit our website at www.sfocc.org or email us directly at [email protected].
New guard dog on our dock today. At shift change (i.e. when we came to paddle) he flumped into the water and swam away.
We are still accepting newbies but he decided there’s more fish in the water than in the canoe.
Come join us- we need to round out a few more crews.
Sunny Saturdays and sunset evenings are here!

Aloha mai kākou! Greetings Bay Area ʻOhana! As you know, the Polynesian Voyaging Society launched the Moananuiākea Voyage for Earth from Juneau this past June. Since then, Hōkūleʻa has been making its way down the west coast of North America honoring First Nations communities in Alaska Southeast, British Columbia, and most recently, Washington State. Last week, it was humbling to see the Hawaiʻi & Pacific Islander communities in Seattle and Tacoma participate in arrival protocols (oli, hoʻokupu, etc.), a water greeting on outrigger canoes, and the performance of mele and hula honoring Hōkūleʻa and our beloved Maui community.
At this time, we would like to share more details about the Bay Area plans and we invite your participation!
Bay Area Welcomes Hōkūleʻa! Aquatic Park Cove, Sunday, Sept. 24 from 12 pm – 5 pm.
Here’s a rough idea of the schedule:
• 12 – 1pm Hōkūleʻa sails into Aquatic Park Cove and is escorted to mooring location for traditional arrival protocols on the water.
• 1:30pm Crew is shuttled to shore for traditional landing protocols on the beach.
• 2 – 3 pm Welcome Ceremony at the bleachers: First Nations, State/City/District Officials, Hawaiian Protocol, Message from Nainoa Thompson.
• 3 – 5 pm Cultural tributes, presentations and performances: Celebrating Hōkūleʻa with focus on Honoring Maui
Nainoa Thompson will be giving special presentations around town, and there will also be public canoe tours of the Hōkūleʻa. Weʻll provide you the dates, times and locations as soon as these activities are confirmed. Within the coming week, youʻll be able to get the latest information by visiting our website at www.hokulea.com. Here’s how you can participate:
Protocol: There will be two protocol occasions at the Aquatic Park arrival event: Once on the beach when the crew is on the shore (1:30), and again during the welcome ceremony at the bleachers (2:30) The community oli will be: Auē Ua Hiti Ē, Ia Waʻa Nui, and I Kū Maumau. Weʻd love to have as many folks join as possible. Please contact us so we can send you information and organize a virtual meeting/rehearsal.
Hoʻokupu/Presentations/Performance: If you, your organization, or hālau would like to offer a hoʻokupu of some type, we welcome your participation between 3 – 5 pm. This can be lei for the waʻa; a chant, song and/or hula; a tribute dedicated to the people of Maui – we welcome your participation. Please contact us so we can schedule you in the 3 – 5 pm time slot, mahalo!
Please message us with your name and e-mail, and weʻll invite you to an Informational Zoom Meeting Wednesday, 9/13, at 6 PM PST.
Mahalo a nui loa a Ke Akua pū!
No pics but ya’ll know how our site can be pretty hectic in the evenings in March, April…. Well all but September basically… Well tonight was pretty awesome - not cold, good surf, and then a windless spot for turns turns turns until the sun set. Yeay for June and late sunsets!
Better than the Red and White Fleet’s bay tour by far! All the sights, none of the diesel in a big pack of OC6’s and ones.
The fast boats are back! Maybe we’ll see some at Tuesday or Thursday practice this week, but we definitely will Saturday as an official spectator boat!
Today, James Spithill's United States SailGP Team capsized in training on San Francisco Bay ahead of the SailGP Season 2 Grand Final this weekend, March 26-27. No injuries were sustained and the team was able to sail the F50 back to dock. Professional Big Wave Surfer and Red Bull athlete Kai Lenny was a guest onboard during the capsize and no doubt had the SailGP experience of his life!
Hmmm, will be watching for this from 7:30 to about 9am. Coincides with high tide.
Yeay, the Ocean Paddler episode on Catalina 2021 is out. Whereas the Women's crews got a lot of play on the live feed the day we raced, it's the SFOCC Men's crew in the camera eye in the final cut, steered by Mr. calm, cool and collected, Omar "the shaka" Manansala.

Please respect: this is the no-go area during the practice and regular Blue Angel shows, today and this weekend. The coast guard has reached out to warn that people are currently illegally sailing in this area. Thank you

Paddling out the Gate past the Seacliff neighborhood, we often use the "pink house" as a landmark but the "basketball court house" is also very visible if you look up while paddling. Well, it could be yours for a mere $25 million...
Check this out - maps of where you need to be in to see the sunset centered under the Golden Gate Bridge. It's a sundial of sorts!
"Every evening the sun sets in the west somewhere behind the Golden Gate Bridge but not at the same spot. In the Winter the sun sets further to the South and in the summer the sun sets further to the North. Therefore to view the sun setting directly between the two bridge towers require the observer to change positions throughout the year. The maps on this website show you where and when you can view the sun setting behind the Golden Gate Bridge."

In normal years, SFOCC, O'Kalani and Tamalpais (and maybe Kaimanu... map cuts off) are used to seeing this view at evening practices March through September. Our friends at BPRC too, if they are tall enough to see over Highway 80.
Bridge or not, ALL paddlers are missing our OC6 sunsets this year! :(
(Your pictures of GGBR sunsets welcomed below!)
Hi and mahalo to OTW360 Performance Paddling Gear and Cyril Derreumaux! Did a little work at the site (and some paddled their oc1’s) in our new OTW360 buffs!
Edit: Also check out our Mirage's sleek, fitted Kiri Covers/Hawaiian Canoe Canvas cover!
Don't stress the seams of your canoe by carrying it ama-down. The seat area is made to bear the weight. And when the wind gust spins the boat, let yourself spin. Don't pull a muscle trying to keep it straight (if you have room.)

PADDLER BINGO - Since we are all not sure on what future date we will race again, here’s one to make you look back at your past. Lots of you will have lines of BINGO but who will have a blackout - I.e. a bingo dot on every box? Alternatively, count a point for each and report your number. (25 max). Miss you all!
