Happy IT Professionals Day! Just a little appreciation post for our incredible team! Our teams incredible problem solving skills, and passion for our customers, make everything we do possible.
Latinas make up only 2% of STEM workers, so finding someone to relate to can be a little challenging. For anyone navigating the complexities of their identity and their chosen field finding the right networking spaces can be key.
How can finding networking opportunities that align with your identity be so important?
Professional Growth👩🏽💻
We can have amazing friends and family but they may not understand our day to day lives at work and how to help us grow in our work environment. Networking with other professionals in our field helps us envision and plan our next career moves with people who have navigated the same field as us.
Feeling Seen 👏🏼
It is equally important to find spaces with people we may connect with based on our identity whether that is as women or latinx people, or lgbt people. Minority identifying people may often have unique work experiences and be one of few like them in their work environment. It can feel more comfortable to be able to discuss your experiences in a room of people with similar experiences.
Intersections🫱🏼🫲🏽
We all have layers to our identities, unique cultural backgrounds, specialized fields of work and so much more can often make us feel isolated and like the only ones experiencing what we are dealing with. Finding the right networking experience allows us to feel comfortable asking the questions that will help us develop as professionals.

And the stats aren't looking any better for some of your favorite tech company's, like Google and Microsoft who also only have latinos represented in 8% of their workforces.
Now why is this happening? Here are just a couple reasons why latinos are so poorly represented in the Tech industry.
What if I want to thrive?
- If 8% sounded bad wait till you hear that latinos only make up only 1.6% of executives and managers in tech. Many people are unlikely to pursue a career in which they see very fews opportunities for upward mobility. It is also difficult to feel comfortable and able to grow when you see no one like you in leadership positions in your field.
Networking. Great If You Can Do it.
- 80% of jobs are filled not by filling applications but by networking. With 70% of tech workers being Caucasian and most likely networking within their own industry, the chances they will be networking with and extending jobs to Latinos is pretty low.
Why Should I Stay?
- Its not just about getting Latinos into the tech workforce but also giving them reasons to stay. Latinos in tech often make $16k less a year than their non latino counterparts. In addition 77% of latinos feel they might need to repress a piece of their identity in order to succeed in tech. With experiences like these its common for latino tech workers to leave the tech space for other industries within a year.

Have you heard of social engineering? Social engineering uses our trust in recognizable sources to talk us into revealing sensitive information.
We get bombarded everyday with emails and texts messages in larger and larger quantities. This leads most people to briefly scan these messages and assume they are coming from a trustworthy and known source.
As long as they have a few recognizable keywords most people are none the wiser leaving them open to falling for phishing scams of varying magnitudes.

There are so many moving pieces of technology that can either make your life a lot easier and simpler or if managed poorly cause you a lot of stress. Hybrid/Remote workers, this ones for you! It has been about 3 years since we started this experiment in working completely remote or hybrid. We have all learned so much about the value of collaborating face to face but also the perks of working in the comfort of your own home or on the go.
We now use more platforms and tools than ever to collaborate with our team members. So now are asking ourselves: Can these truly replace in person collaboration or not?

Look back on a piece of advice or lesson that in hindsight seems obvious now. Whether it is starting a small business or taking on any challenging project, we all wish we could get a glimpse into to our future and be prepared for the challenges ahead.

Why start a small business?
Anyone who has seen a small business owner work 7 days a week and balance wearing multiple hats has probably asked this question a couple times.
As our founder Lawrence stated starting a small business is often about creating something bigger than yourself. A small business is an opportunity to impact and uplift your community, from your clients to your employees. Small businesses may be small in size but their impact is huge.

Did you know business owners often experience burn out because they are taking on too many jobs?
Burn out is physical, emotional or mental exhaustion, accompanied by decreased motivation, lowered performance. AKA a nightmare for a business owner.

While this is a great step in the right direction here is why using team members personal devices can cause a few problems.
Efficiency 🏃♂️
Many teams send important data, documents, and pictures directly to each persons phone numbers making them nearly impossible to find easily and quickly when needed.
Solution: Applications like Teams and Slack can easily be installed on any device and are much easier to organize.
Reliable 📁
When data is stored on a personal devices it becomes nearly impossible to access if that person is out for the day or the device is lost, stolen or damaged.
Solution: Store all data in company established platform like Microsoft's SharePoint, Dropbox or Google Drive.
Security🔑
Data stored directly on a personal device becomes a security risk if that device experiences a breach or that employee is being offboarded.
Solution: Only store company data in an application that can be easily managed by the company allowing access to be cut off when someone is offboarded, like Teams, Dropbox, or Slack.

We've all had this exact thought at some point, "I have a idea for a small business! How hard could it be?"
As any of our clients and our founders can tell you it is definitely very hard. When you are a small business owner, you are often doing multiple jobs at once and working crazy hours.
We all dream of being our own bosses but as our founder Lawrence has noted, small business ownership does not mean you respond to no one but it does mean that the results of your decisions are often only on you.
