Hey team! I would love to connect with anyone producing an event in the next few months. I’ve been brewing something your attendees will LOVE. Holler back, you won’t be disappointed! (Feel free to share!)

Myles Weissleder - Community Leadership | Mural 08/19/2023

Thank you everyone! We did this together!!! ❤️✌🏻

For over a decade, SF New Tech was the glue that brought together Silicon Valley's brightest minds and most promising startups. As founder and "ring leader" of this storied community, I'm filled with pride at what we accomplished together.

At its peak, SF New Tech fostered a 50,000-strong community of engineers, founders, investors, and tech enthusiasts. We vetted and gave a platform to over 1000 startups, hosting 300+ events that sold 55,000 tickets.

Our events often took place at an unmarked nightclub on the edge of town - the true underbelly of the scene. We had a taco truck outside and cheap drinks inside. The magic transpired on stage and in the connections made among attendees. Careers were changed, money was raised, startups were discovered, dream jobs were found.

SF New Tech pioneered the concept of a live startup launch platform where entrepreneurs could demo their latest innovations in front of the people who mattered most. We were the first of our kind and spawned an entire industry of pitch events and communities.

Our stage hosted future tech giants like Waze, Twilio, Splunk, Stripe, Twitch, Evernote, and 23andMe in their early days. Sponsors and partners included AT&T, Cisco, Microsoft, PayPal, and The New York Times.

You can relive the magic by watching over 100 original pitch videos in our video library: https://youtube.com/

Or check out the whole SFNT era archive here! https://muralapp.io/myles-weissleder

But more important than any statistic was the spirit of community SF New Tech fostered. We kept Silicon Valley humming with optimism, creativity, and camaraderie through good times and bad. Launching a startup can be a lonely endeavor, but at SF New Tech, founders found cheerleaders, mentors, beta testers, and lifelong friends.

If you were part of the SF New Tech community, I'd love for you to share your stories in the comments! Let's reminisce and celebrate this special era together.

I'm honored to have led this community during such a pivotal time. The connections and momentum we built together rippled outwards, cementing the Bay Area's reputation as the world's startup hub. Though times change, I know the spirit of openness, innovation, and community that defined SF New Tech lives on in Silicon Valley and beyond. We have so much to be proud of!

Well, this is cool! What a great day for growth, connectivity, social impact, innovation, awareness, and the activation of ideas among the wonders of nature!

Big news from our ol' trusty SF New Tech Meetup, the OG “tech meetup” as we welcome the leadership of the venerable Bobby Fishkin!

Here's what I just sent to our members @ meetup.com/sfnewtech

Woohoo!

- Myles

--------------------------

Subject: Introducing Bobby Fishkin - and a new lift-off for SF New Tech!

Hello SFNT -

Today is a big day! Today, I am proudly handing a set of SF New Tech keys over to my friend and colleague Bobby Fishkin, who’ll be stepping in to co-lead our Meetup group into the future!

Bobby is an amazing all-around individual who’s also a Chief Doer at CrowdDoing, an incredible organization firmly based on the creation of social impact, sustainable social innovation and social enterprise. Amazing stuff! He's got big things planned outside and in!

I’ve known, worked for, played with, and trusted Bobby for many years and I am honored to see where he can take our merry group of Bay Area tech lovin’ innovation-forward thinkers and doers.

I know y’all have been itching for some engagement! Bobby is going to put our group in gear and spark new, powerful ideas and actions into the world in the process. Just watch! Keep your eyes peeled and your spam filters checked!

SF may be slightly under the weather, but the world never stopped. Old systems have been optimized by new systems. And, guess what? That’s a GREAT thing! Vivå Evolution! See you out there!

Cheers!
Myles

Storytime! It’s amazing bearing witness to how ideas take shape over time to become pillars and industry drivers. It’s also amazing to get invited into a pre-IPO round along the way. (You too, read on!)

At SF New Tech we were blessed to be on the bleeding edge of tech as we provided innovators a formidable (and incredibly fun!) outlet to show off their new ideas, projects, and companies.

In 2010, a very young Italian company with a silly name applied to demo on stage. I remember meeting its CTO, Paolo Privitera, a few weeks prior and was impressed by him so I slotted “Doochoo” for a demo of their nascent survey tool… and that’s where this story begins.

As it turned out, Doochoo’s demo was the least favorite of all that night. The audience panned it --“didn’t do it for me!” -- and Doochoo faded away, or at least that’s what we thought. Ha!

Meanwhile, Paolo and I, both with a passion for helping people rise up through events/data/access, not only became fast friends, we’ve continued to conspire together across multiple projects, like Evensi (acquired by Events.com) and 1521 Ventures.

Doochoo evolved from its humble roots, through the years, and became core technology that eventually pivoted and got renamed Pick1, then acquired by Evensi, is now about to go public on Nasdaq in 2023 after its recent acquisition by Events.com!

It wasn’t a straight path. Not in the least. But Paolo kept his leadership strong throughout, and from a 10,000-foot view, the journey from Doochoo to IPO makes a lot of sense:

Doochoo: Dynamic Surveys > Opinion Data + Social Data > Pivoted and got renamed to Pick1

Pick1: Social Data > Audience Analytics > Interest-based AI > Acquired by Evensi

Evensi: Global Events Aggregator > AI-Driven Social and Event/Interest-Based Data > World’s Largest Events Marketing and Discovery Platform > Acquired by Events.com

Events.com: … > 2023 IPO on Nasdaq > BOOM!

Pretty fantastic if you ask me!

Please join me in congratulating Paolo! What an impeccable story of how, with patience and fortitude, ideas can grow into a universal force!

And ... Since I’ve played a small role in this journey, I have been given the privilege to share a very special and rare opportunity!

If you have any interest in investing in a pre-IPO family and friends round of Events.com— you are invited to inquire further and join the journey! PM me.

The Doochoo story lives on!

👊🏻

Myles Weissleder 06/07/2022

Hello SF New Tech people! Remember all the good times we used to have together? It's storytime!

As most of you probably know, I've been a tech-centric community builder and instigator for most of my career. I've had some really good years and, well, some really bad ones. So far, 2022 has been one of those really bad years.

In late 2021 I was recruited by the CEO of a tiny, unknown alternative investing platform that drank up my grand vision to create a community layer as a basis for long-term customer value. Once I arrived on the scene, however, I was handed a 630-page document from the Securities Exchange Commission and was told to figure out what meets federal compliance laws and what doesn't. Turned out, most all of what I wanted to bring to the table on the community front was a non-starter. Needless to say, my tenure there didn't last long.

Since, I've had months-long, multi-pronged interviews with a number of companies, and just when I thought I rang the bell, I learned they decided to change directions: "We decided to hire internally" .... "We need to hire more diversity"(!)

The most frustrating part of this is how I've managed to be self-employed for nearly two decades and now I feel like I just graduated college and am applying for my first job. The traditional model for finding opportunities is completely broken.
The purpose of this note is to eat my pride and to broadcast out into my network (all of you wonderful people!) that I could use a little confidence boost as I continue this slog.

But more so, I would love referrals to anyone looking for an experienced community marketing and public affairs guy who's been-there-done-that as the fearless leader of SF's largest and most-loved tech community for over a decade, and one of the founding fathers of the first real social network, Meetup.com. And much more!

If you think you can help, please visit me at http://www.mylesweissleder.com for more texture on my professional life. Please be sure to click the big blue button to view my portfolio!

My perfect situation is teaming up with a handful of super-bright and creative world-changers who push back against the status quo to make magic. (I'm not really a corporate guy!)

Thank you all. You mean the world to me! 🙂

Myles Weissleder Hello! Thanks for popping over! I recently freed up from a senior marketing role at an alternative investment platform that ultimately wasn't in a position to leverage community as a business pillar. C'est la vie for them... but good for you! If your organization is looking to optimize its current c...
