SUMMER SAFETY TIPS: Playground
Unfortunately, the playground is a common place where children can get injured. Injuries happen at a playground a little less often than they do at home. Falls from jungle gyms, monkey bars, swings or slides commonly cause injuries.
*Make sure your playground design and equipment complies with US Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines
*Make sure that they have the right equipment for your child’s age and height
*Avoid any equipment with sharp edges or mounted on hard surfaces
*Be sure your child can be seen clearly from the entire playground
*Make sure there are no tripping hazards within the play area.
***Let them have fun!

SUMMER SAFETY TIPS: Swimming
More than 290,000 swimming-related injuries were treated in hospital emergency rooms, doctors' offices, and clinics in 2018 according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Diving injuries can cause scrapes, cuts, bruises and broken bones.
Many of these injuries might have been prevented by observing some simple safety precautions found at these links:

SUMMER SAFETY TIPS: 4th Of July/Fireworks
Fireworks are a staple for Fourth of July celebrations in the U.S. The thrill of fireworks, however, can be dangerous. On average, 230 people visit the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries in the weeks around July 4. Most of these injuries are to the hands and fingers. Fireworks can also cause serious injuries to your eyes.
Typical fireworks injuries can be caused by firecrackers, bottle rockets, sparklers and more. Sparklers can burn at about 2,000 degrees, hot enough to melt metal!

SUMMER SAFETY TIPS: Helmet Safety
Are helmets just for biking? No – helmets are meant to protect the head when participating in any sport where there is a chance of a fall onto the head, a collision, or when speeds may exceed a fast jog, such as:
Biking
Skating (roller, inline or ice)
Skateboarding
Scooter
Snowmobiling
Skiing
Sledding
Horseback riding
How do I pick the right helmet?
First – it’s important to get the appropriate helmet for your sport.
The Consumer Protection Safety Commission has specific guidelines for helmets that you can check on their website.
To make sure the helmet you pick will fit your child:
bring her to the store with you
measure her head for size
try on several helmets of the appropriate size to find one that feels right
adjust the fit with the pads or sizing ring
adjust the side straps with the helmet level on the head, two finger widths above the eyebrow
buckle and adjust the chin strap so that a wide open mouth pulls the helmet tight
SUMMER SAFETY TIPS: Lawnmower Safety
Over 17,000 children are treated each year for lawnmower injuries in the U.S.
4,000 children require trips to the emergency room for their injury.
75 children die each year due to lawnmower injuries.
Boys are injured more frequently than girls.
Injuries are seen most often in young children (1-3 years) and teenagers.
Lawnmowers are the leading cause of traumatic amputations (loss of all or part of a limb) in children.
The following tips will help your family avoid lawnmower injuries-
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) have a number of recommended safety guidelines:
Lawnmower injuries are mostly from contact with the blades or from debris thrown from the mower.
No child of any age should be in the yard while it is being mowed
No riders should ever sit with the driver on a riding lawnmower
Remove all debris from the yard before mowing (rocks, sticks, toys)
Wear safety gear when mowing the lawn:
Eye protection
Sturdy over ankle boots
Long pants
Do not pull a mower backwards
Avoid operating a riding mower in reverse
Be very careful when mowing a slope or hill
Avoid cutting wet grass
Your mower should have a safety feature which stops the blades when the handle is released
Shut the mower off before cleaning or checking
DO NOT leave a running mower unattended
Make sure your mower has an annual servicing and is in good repair before using
Happy Mowing!
Way to go Josh!

Fireworks injuries are all too common around the July 4 holiday.
The majority of these injuries are to the hand, arm and fingers, many times resulting in an amputation.
Here’s how to use fireworks safely via www.HandCare.org:
Always obey the barriers at a public fireworks show so you don’t get too close.
Never allow children to use fireworks, and always supervise teenagers during use.
Wear eye protection when using fireworks.
Always soak used fireworks in water when done using, and never try to relight a dud.
Never use fireworks indoors or under a shelter.
Always stand when using sparklers, and never throw them.
The course is on, those of you will couldn't make it this year we're looking forward to seeing you next year already.
