Mary Wings created the first le***an comic book “Come Out Comix” in 1973. She pioneered the q***r comics scene and enabled so much of the work we do and love now. She would come to our first summer class with Lee Marrs and (also dearly departed) Trina Robbins to tell our students what it was like creating q***r and feminist underground comix back in the 1970s. She will be terribly missed. Rest in power, Mary Wings ❤️

Trina Robbins was a comics pioneer and a force of nature. She co-created the first women's comics anthologies “It Ain't Me Babe Comix” (1970) and “Wimmen's Comix” (1972), created the first literary comics story about a q***r person ("Sandy Comes Out" in 1972), pioneered feminist comics history books (“The Great Women Cartoonists”, “Pretty in Ink”, etc.), co-founded the feminist comics org. “Friends of Lulu”, was the first woman to draw Wonder Woman, and so much more. She was a friend of the CCA MFA in Comics, coming to campus every year to speak with and inspire students since our comics program began. Every feminist, q***r, and other marginalized voice in comics owes a debt to her tenacity and fierceness, breaking open doors and demanding they stay open for everyone. Rest in Power, Trina!
