Giving AI the reins 🤖🎨

Known for his dynamic compositions, David Salle’s "New Pastorals" series at Gladstone .gallery uses AI to push beyond his extensive knowledge of painting. Working with engineer Grant Davis, he trained a neural network to engage with his own artistic process, feeding it both art historical references and images from his original "Pastorals" series. This results in a surreal, digitally textured scene of fragmented figures and landscapes. 🌀💥

Diving right in with Dana Schutz 🧠💥

Starting our Monday with daydreams of “The Sea and All Its Subjects” at David Zwirner from our Parisian whirlwind last week. This show takes viewers into surreal worlds where figures float through wild, impossible scenarios. Her bold wet-on-wet paintings, from one-eyed creatures trading eyes in “The Optometrists” to an octopus mysteriously being moved through a museum in “Mourning an Octopus”, are playful allegories representing the complexities of the human condition.

Field of view 👁️🌷🍃

Jordan Casteel’s solo exhibition presents a vibrant collection of figurative portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. The show is on view at the Hill Art Foundation and is curated by Laura Haynes .

Casteel’s paintings, spanning the last decade, capture the people and environment of New York. Exploring the juxtaposition between the ordinary and extraordinary, she brings luminous color to mundane subjects while portraying them on large scale canvases. Nestled in the heart of Chelsea, the space warmly invites viewers to engage with the artwork, perfectly complimented by furniture designed by Batsheva Hay . 🖼️🛋️

Through the Eyes of 👀

On view is “Francis Picabia: Femmes”, an exhibition featuring paintings by the French modernist master Francis Picabia, highlighting his work from the 1920s through the 1950s.

The exhibition focuses on Picabia’s exploration of women as a recurring subject in his art, spanning three decades of his career. Founding and then rejecting almost every major artistic movement of the early 20th century, paintings of women remained at the core of Picabia’s practice. The exhibition showcases key works from his Monster series, Transparencies, and pin-up portraits, reflecting his unique and influential approach to modern art.

It’s Pumpkin Season 🍂🎃

Perfectly nestled in the Guggenheim inspired main staircase is our favorite ‘art moment’ of the Presidio Height Project — this sumptuous bronze pumpkin by the global sensation Yayoi Kusama .

We love how Kusama’s iconic polka dots mesh with the organic form of this sculpture, connecting the foyer of this home with the natural world just outside the front door. 🤍

Abstract Landscapes in Motion 🎨

Gagosian ’s current exhibition, “Out of Country”, showcases recent works by artist Mark Grotjahn 🎉

Inspired by the landscapes of western Colorado, particularly his experiences during ski and fly-fishing tours, Grotjahn continues his exploration of abstraction. His works, while suggesting rural vistas, prioritize the layering of line, color, and texture to create a complex, dynamic rhythm.

The exhibition includes bold, expressive paintings dominated by broken arcs and vibrant colors, along with sculptural impasto rolls, known as “slugs.” Using cardboard mounted on linen, Grotjahn carves into the surface, adding unique texture to his compositions. These final entries in the Backcountry series echo Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, engaging the viewer in a visceral and immersive experience of nature. ❤️

Torrent 🌪️

On view , artist Julia Jo ’s latest exhibition showcases her exploration of emotion through the interplay of figuration and abstraction. 🎨

Taking inspiration from memories of her own interpersonal misconnections, Jo begins each painting by sketching a largely figurative composition in oil directly onto the canvas. Utilizing oil paint, pastels, and oil sticks, her dynamic works capture the complexity of human relationships and emotional intensity.

The exhibition invites viewers to engage with the paintings, revealing hidden figures and emotional depths through extended observation. Jo‘s layered approach mirrors the intensity of a storm, with chaotic energy that parallels the potency of emotions. 🌪️

The Ultimate Powder Room 💄🪞

In the Presidio Heights Project, our client’s powder room has a refined, artistic touch with the work by Yosh*tomo Nara and Jim Hodges.

Growing up during the economic boom of postwar Japan, which witnessed an influx of American popular culture, Yosh*tomo Nara ’s works are informed by comic books and cartoons, Walt Disney, anime, manga and punk rock. His subjects are frequently depicted in a doe-eyed, cartoonesque manner, and rendered with the two-dimensionality of traditional Japanese painting. 👧🏻

Jim Hodges ’ work explores themes of fragility, temporality, love and death in a highly original and poetic vocabulary. 🤍 He frequently deploys different materials and techniques: from ready-made objects to traditional media such as graphite and ink. In this work, the web came to symbolize the fleeting nature of existence and the strength to survive. 🕸️🕷️

Spotlight✨🐋🌊

Irish artist Padraig Timoney ’s exceptionally diverse practice encompasses photography, painting, collage, sculpture, assemblage, and performance. In his vivid Battle Royale (2016), abstraction and figuration never seem too far apart, often appearing on the verge of collapsing into one another.

“Battle Royale” is a two-part artwork. The first part is an acrylic painting depicting a scene from a Moby-Dick Pop-Up book, showing the whale ramming and sinking the Pequod. On top of this, the oil painting portrays a scene from a 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea pop-up book with a giant squid attacking the Nautilus. The juxtaposition brings together these two iconic sea creatures, symbolizing isolated and enraged egos in their respective stories.

We are thrilled that this special artwork has found its home close to the water 🐋 🌊.

🌊Endless Summer 🌊

Considered one of the most influential photographers of his generation, Richard Misrach is instrumental in pioneering the use of color photography and large-scale format in the 1970s. ⏳For over 50 years, Misrach has photographed the dynamic landscape of the American West through an environmentally aware and politically astute lens. Misrach’s large-scale color vistas powerfully document the devastating ecological effects of human intervention on the natural world.🌏

In our Atherton Collection, the work seamlessly blends with the dining room design, infusing the client‘s interior with a dreamlike seascape. Taken from his hotel balcony in Honolulu, it depicts the delicate balance between human gestures and the vastness of the sea, shedding light on our complex relationship with nature.

Richard Misrach’s recent exhibition featureed a never-before-exhibited series shot in Hawaii with the Alonzo King LINES Ballet, focusing on the interplay between art, environment, and the human form. 💙

Summer Breeze 🌬️🖼️

“On Landscape”, currently on view through August 2nd, brings together a multi-generational group of artists reworking the genre for a changing world. 🎨

This selection of works spans a century and showcases a variety of styles and formats, from detailed observations of specific landforms and coastlines to more abstract and half-remembered constructions.👩🏻‍🎨The scenes presented are mostly devoid of human figures but include subtle indications of human habitation, such as hedgerows and fences.

“As the physical world increasingly recedes behind facsimile, landscape painting endures as a hinge between representation and the restless horizon that evades capture.”🌳💚

Spotlight 💫✨

Our Mill Valley Collection features a stunning work by Julie Mehretu . Julie Mehretu is known for her multi-layered monumental paintings of abstract landscapes. In late 2017, Mehretu began her collaboration with master printer Case Hudson on a series of six large aquatints inspired by the artist’s recent trip to China.

Six Bardos series reference the Buddhist bardos, the six liminal stages of the soul from birth to death described in the Tibetan Book of the Dead. The print’s abstracted marks and layered lines reflect Mehretu’s exploration of world history and politics, engaging viewers in a contemplative journey through the transitional stages of the soul. 🧘

🔔 Currently on view in Venice is “Ensemble”, the largest exhibition of Julie Mehretu’s work to date in Europe 🎉 Swipe to check out some installation shots from the show!

💫🌸 Love in Bloom🌷

“May 5th 2022 (2022)” by Hugo McCloud belongs to a collection of flower paintings made of single-use plastic bags. The series of paintings demonstrate McCloud’s expertise in the manipulation of materials.

🌺Flowers have been an important motif in McCloud’s practice, deeply rooted in childhood memories of his mother’s floristry. 💐The flowers speak to the passage of time and changing of seasons.

“The beauty of a flower is not the bloom but all that steps both before and after until it returns back to the earth. The strength to come out of the ground, to holding onto the last petal. I thank you for continually exuding this strength. When I paint flowers I am connecting to this.” — Hugo McCloud, on Mother’s Day, 2024

“As For Now” marks artist Hugo McCloud ’s fifth solo exhibition with 🎉

The exhibition showcases a significant evolution in McCloud’s artistic approach, featuring new works from his renowned plastic and tar stamped painting series, demonstrating his seamless transition between figuration and abstraction. 🎨

McCloud revisits earlier bodies of work armed with a deeper understanding of the materials he employs and how they interact, as well as new insights informed by recent life experiences. McCloud’s latest works utilize unconventional materials like aluminum sheeting and black liquid tar, paired with traditional techniques such as woodblock printing, to produce abstract stamped paintings.
