Scenes from the KMS New School Year Picnic that took place this past weekend in beautiful McLaren Park. KMS Families soaked in the surroundings while enjoying and rebuilding friendships as we embrace the new school year!
In the After School, artists created vibrant, collaborative artworks allowing color, spontaneity, and intuition lead the way. Each mark documents the joy and action of the experience of making and talking about art.
The first day of school!
KMS Learners started off this school year full of joy, stories, and purposeful play as they joined their teachers, new and old friends, as partners and researchers.
The Reggio Emilia approach emphasizes the essential relationship between the learner and their surroundings. The environment not only speaks to us, but serves and teaches us.
KMS has undergone quite a transformation during Professional Development Week. In addition to our new, vibrant blue, our teachers dedicated real time and focus optimizing our spaces. Teachers collaboratively enhanced all of KMS' dynamic and exciting learning environments designed to stimulate learners, encourage exploration, foster research, and to prioritize the joy of learning.
Weaving the Back Deck fence has been an ongoing project this Summer. It started with Summer Campers waving bracelets and starting their own friendship bracelet store and turned into an installation for the whole school!
Summer Campers created unique works of art using the pigments found in the flowers growing in our garden.
Scenes from Summer Camp Session 1: Nature Makers.
Campers utilized materials from nature, explored transformation as a big idea, and put on an art show for the entire KMS School Community!
Word of the Week: "Transformation"
Summer Camp Artists have been working hard transforming found and natural materials to create individual and collaborative compositions focused on texture, movement, and color.
The best part about making art is the process!
This week KMS Artists kicked off Summer Camp, making in nature. Campers found organic materials from the garden to explore pigments, textures, and composition.
In honor of Maria Luna's 40-year tenure at KMS, we announced at this years ArtFest that we are naming the Spanish Room after her.
May Maria Luna’s example continue to give every student a love for the Spanish Language and an appreciation for the ancient cultures who came before them.
Since 1984 Maria has brought a love for Mexican Folk Dance, music and the Spanish Language to generations of KMS students. Those who have learned from her have known the joy of performance - standing tall, projecting your voice and staying in character. Her strength, grace and humor is admired by many. She is a lover of beautiful things and without her the KMS environment would not be what it is today. We cherish and are grateful for your contributions to KMS.
Our last days of the 2023/2024 school year were filled with homemade healthy frozen treats, plenty of time in the garden, lots of reflection, and all the love.
We wish everyone a healthy and happy Summer Break and look forward to seeing everyone at Summer Camp!
KMS Learners ended the school year on a tasty note - a KMS Tradition brought back this year, the pie toss!
Congratulations Dania! Your creativity knows no ends and you are a friend to all.
We can't wait to see what you accomplish next year.
But first were so happy you will be joining KMS Summer Camp as an assistant counselor!

KMS Elementary Students performed "La Serpiente Emplumada" (Pre-Hispanic Song).
KMS students collaborated on every aspect of this performance from the creation of La Serpiente to their synergistic movements on stage!
Yolanda Ancheta's dedication to KMS was honored at this year's ArtFest when the Peach Pitt in Peach Palace was named after her, marking her 30 years of service.
May her example inspire every teacher who dedicates their time to the growth of lives at their earliest stages.
When Yolnada interviewed at KMS in 1994 she had recently moved from the Philippines to San Francisco. Yolanda had been a college professor so when she saw what was then called Dirt Mountain with children playing freely covered in mud she thought to herself “this isn't for me”. Thankfully she gave KMS a chance because she soon discovered she was a natural at fostering the growth of young children. Watching her connect with a toddler is like watching a magician at work.

Thank you KMS teachers for all of your dedication, energy, and hard work!
Thank you Maria Luna for all of your wisdom, experience, talent, and grace inspiring our learners and putting this performance all together!

KMS Pre Kindergartners entered the stage soaring gracefully like Frida's Eagle Gertrudis!
Like her eagle, Frida's imagination could fly high.
One day she said: "Pies para que los quiero si tengo alas para volar?"
(Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?)

KMS Pumpkins performed with energy, gusto, and joy using their bodies and voices to fill the Amphitheater!
