See you in the stores!!
Happy New Year and happy January! Whether you're just starting out or a seasoned pro, we have advice for all your gardening projects; from planting to w**ding to feeding plants indoors and out.
January to-do list ββ
πΏ Plant deciduous flowering cherries and plums, dormant fruit trees and Japanese maples. Look for deciduous vines as well, such as Akebia and Boston Ivy.
πΏ Dormant roses have arrived in our stores. Learn how to plant and care for them. Plant roses with E.B. Stone Sure Start and Greenall Rose Grow Planting Mix.
πΏ Top dress roses and tender plants with Sloat Forest Mulch Plus.
πΏ If it has rained, continue to dormant spray. Dormant sprays help prevent peach leaf curl, fungal rot, and other diseases. We recommend Monterey Liqui-Cop or Bonide Copper Fungicide for disease and Bonide All Seasons Oil for insects. They can be mixed and sprayed at the same time!
πΏ Protect your plants from slugs and snails with Sluggo or Sluggo Plus.
πΏ Protect citrus from rodents with Bonide Repels All.
πΏ Donβt forget to water houseplants, especially if the heater has been on. Outdoor plants that are not exposed to rain should be checked too.
πΏ Deadhead cyclamen to keep them in bloom.
πΏ Protect plants and tender succulents from cold with a frost blanket such as N-Sulate and use an anti-transpirant spray such as Wiltpruf. Water prior to spraying.
πΏ Clean up the garden: Prune roses, shrubs, and trees. Prune and cut back perennials & ornamental grasses. Need a little guidance? Contact us!
πΏ After pruning, be sure to clean your tools.
πΏ Stop the w**ds! W**ds that begin with winter rains go to seed in March & April. But the clever gardener never lets them get that far. Pull w**ds now before they go to seed. Apply Safer W**d Prevention Plus or Bonide Maize Ready-to-spray made from natural corn gluten to prevent w**d germination.
πΏ Now is the time to remove plants that arenβt thriving to make room for healthier plants. Sad, but true!
πΏ Feed the birds: We have suet in 6 flavors to attract a variety of birds from woodpeckers to phoebes. Finch Socks with Nyjer are easy to use and popular with birds! Our seed blends have no added fillers

We source our locally grown houseplants from many growers -- one absolute favorite is Sunborne Nursery, owned and operated by Dan & Candice, along with their son Eli. In business since 1975, they grow indoor plants and succulents and are working on expanding by building another greenhouse for additional propagating and growing. Our buyers at Sloat Garden Center often visit to hand pick plants for their stores.
About Sunborne πΏπΏ
Sunborne Nursery started not as a nursery, but as a chicken ranch in the mid 1970βs. One day a delivery driver suggested they convert the 50,000 square feet of vacant chicken houses on Danβs family chicken ranch into greenhouses. It sounded like a reasonable idea, except Dan and his family knew nothing about growing plants.
As a start, Dan enrolled in the Horticulture Department at San Luis Obispo and took some courses with Dr. Noble. During one of the class trips to Gallup and Stribling Orchids of Santa Barbara, Dan had a chance meeting with the president of the foliage division. Not knowing any better, Dan told him about the vacant chicken houses and asked him what opportunities he saw for starting a nursery. He said there was a shortage of tropical foliage propagation material and suggested that Dan go into producing rooted cuttings. He went on to offer stock plants. Dan jumped at the offer and Sunborne Nursery was born.
Since a majority of the cuttings and finished stock plants were initially sold in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dan and Candice decided to move the nursery to San Francisco in 1989. In 1991, the business evolved from a growing operation to the wholesale distribution company that it is today. While Dan is primarily responsible for sales and purchasing, Eli manages the day to day operations, and Candice, whose background is in art, plays an important part in the aesthetics and design of Sunborne. Together, they have found their calling in the beauty and environmentally enriching qualities of the tropical plant world.

Dear Garden Guru,
I have very abundant Oxalis in my garden beds. Our neighbors have been spraying w**d killer every now and again to keep it at bay. They haven't planted the beds and stopped the w**d killer when we told them we wanted to plant the beds. (I want to plant vegetables and flowers including, bulbs, and sweet peas along the fence). Any thoughts of how to get rid of Oxalis? The two beds are 15 x 5 ft. -- Nalani in San Francisco
-----------
Hi Nalani,
You should attempt to dig as much of the Oxalis out as possible. Mature plants have many small bulblets at the base. Sifting the soil after you have dug what you can will help capture any loose bulblets. Cover your beds with the lasagna method of mulching. First wet newspaper, then cardboard, then compost or forest mulch, then more newspaper, planting mix, cardboard, then compost. You can plant directly into your lasagna layers. Any Oxalis trying to resprout will be depressed by the mulch layers.
