This will be the last holiday season at Mapamundi Kids. We will be closing up the shop in early 2024. ❤️‍🩹

We know this is a huge announcement, so please bear with us while we sort through all of our emotions and make sure we dot all our i’s, cross all our t’s.

In the meantime, we are OPEN for all of your holiday shopping! The store is full of a ton of great stuff – toys/gifts for newborn to 10+, clothing, shoes, rain gear, books (beautiful books!), stuffies, home décor… you know it all.

I’m usually in the full holiday spirit at this point in the year, but finding it hard to focus. It’s supposed to be our busiest time, but sales are down and have been all year. In fact, it’s the worst year on record in TEN years and I just can’t keep trying to make it work anymore. The stress of doing so has negatively impacted my health, both physically and emotionally, as well as my relationships with family and friends. I’ve been kept up at night trying to come up with new ways to increase sales and encourage shopping, but unfortunately, my efforts don’t seem to be working. I know it’s the same story for so many small businesses out there. I see you.

Our little shop has survived a global pandemic, multiple natural disasters in Northern California like wildfires, a winter that brought unprecedented amounts of rain, a day where the sun didn’t shine at all (remember Orange Skies Day?), all of which negatively impacted our business. Coupled with a year of slow sales, the shop just isn’t supporting itself anymore.

We will share more details in the coming weeks, but in the meantime we are OPEN and still need your support, in fact now more than ever. So please come by and say hi, I need to see friendly faces to get through this!

Did you know next year we will celebrate our TEN year anniversary? A minor miracle for a small shop, and one that has survived an ownership change and a global pandemic, yet I’m not sure we will be open to celebrate this milestone. This holiday season is truly a make or break it situation, and I know I’m not alone in this as many small business owners I’ve talked to share this sentiment; it just doesn’t make financial sense anymore. Sales have declined dramatically since 2022, and I’m not even sure how to buy for the upcoming holiday season, which of course is usually our busiest time of year and those sales mean we can create a buying plan for the rest of the year. Covid forever changed the retail landscape, and coupled with supply chain issues, and sky high costs in manufacturing and shipping it’s becoming increasingly hard to do business. We were all forced to become studious online shoppers and this hasn’t changed, but I can’t compete with large online retailers flash sales and constant discounts. I won’t even mention ‘the algortithm’ because we all know how dismissal that situation is for small businesses. What I can’t stomach though is closing the shop and seeing another real estate office or law firm move into the space (no offense!), as kid-centric spaces are becoming increasingly rare in San Francisco so I’m going to hang on. Plus nothing is better than hearing a kid in the shop telling their caregiver how much they ‘love everything!’ I’m clearly at a loss here, and have no answers. I’m tired and there are days (like today!) where I work for 10+ hours and still can’t pay my rent and wonder what it’s all for. If you’re still reading this, THANK YOU. And I would love to hear from you, near or far, what would you like to see here? I’m open to any and all suggestions on what we should be stocking, or do you have an idea for an event to host at the shop? A collaboration? I’m all ears! ❤️ 📷:
