Asian Women's Shelter

The survivors we work with every day embody the meaning of courage, hope, and determination. Please call our crisis line if you or someone you know need help.

Asian Women's Shelter works to eliminate domestic violence by promoting the social, political and economic self-determination of women and all survivors of violence and oppression. Asian Women's Shelter (AWS) was founded in 1988 to address the needs of women, children, transgender and non-binary survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, especially those who are immigrants and refugees

For today, we wanted to highlight a special project from our leadership team at Y.A.A.A.S (Youth are Aware, Active & Supportive)!

The youth leaders wanted to take the opportunity to call attention to s*xual assault during SAAM (Sexual Assault Awareness Month). Their Denim Day project aims to bring attention to survivors and Denim Day itself, which originated from a s*xual assault case where a judge overturned a r**e conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans. In response, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work to protest the ruling. Denim Day has since become a symbol of protest against victim-blaming and a call for awareness and support for survivors. 💙

Over the last year, MILCK and her team have worked in collaboration with an all female team to produce a short documentary film following her journey after her song of healing went viral at the Women’s March. I Can’t Keep Quiet is complete and had its world premiere at the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival on Thursday, May 11.

I Can’t Keep Quiet was produced in partnership with P&G Studios by an incredible team including Peabody Award-winning documentary filmmaker Grace Lee, Emmy Award winner Maile M. Zambuto, Kimberly Doebereiner of P&G Studios, GRAMMY nominee Adrianne E. Gonzalez (AG), Connie K. Lim (MILCK), Brianna M. Arnolde, and Peabody Award-winner Chung, who makes her directorial debut with this film.

I Can’t Keep Quiet is an intimate portrait of one woman’s quest for healing that reverberated around the globe through her song “Quiet,” an anthem for the women’s movement. Five years later, we take a deeper look into the song's impact on MILCK's journey of reclamation: reclaiming trust in herself, her sense of belonging, and her sisterhood with "Quiet's" co-writer, AG. As we follow MILCK’s path of activism and artistry, we get a window into how she's awakened by the stillness of quarantine and the reckoning of our country’s racial justice movement. Her acknowledgement and accountability for her blind spots provides her and AG a chance for healing as they celebrate that it’s never too late to reclaim our voices.

Our Asian Women’s Shelter team is excited to share our campaign that will launch this week. We partnered with artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya to create art that reflects some of the key themes in our work with survivors and invite our API communities in for conversation on the ways violence intersects with our lives and most importantly, what we can do about it. So !

Please join us for the "Let's Talk About Us" launch event on February 15th at Powell BART station (Enter from the 4th and Market entrance). Tag us in your photos with the 5 different posters and let us know how your conversations are going! The images will reach thousands of commuters each day in more than one dozen stations systemwide, onboard trains serving each BART line, and on bus shelters and billboards in 5 neighborhoods including Chinatown, SoMa and the Mission.

Just Listen: Too often, survivors of domestic violence are not believed or are told indirectly and even directly that it's their fault. This can make them feel even more isolated and alone and prevent them from taking steps to address their situation. By just listening, we can show support and understanding, and help them to feel seen and heard. This can be an important step in their healing process and in preventing future harm.

[Image Description: Image of a confident middle-aged API woman dressed in pink with wavy dark hair. She is making direct eye contact and is surrounded by bold and colorful flowers. Orange text over the image reads “Just Listen” with campaign website letstalkaboutus.org]
