Bay Area Garden Guide 02 | Affordable and Drought-Resistant: Bright Colors of Native California
In this part of our Bay Area Garden Plants series, let's get to know a plant that is very suitable for the Bay Area climateâBrittlebush. Not only is it visually appealing, but it also has strong drought resistance, making it ideal for the Bay Area's natural environment.
đź Plant Characteristics:
Brittlebush is a shrub-like plant, typically reaching heights and widths of 3-6 feet. It features gray leaves and vibrant yellow flowers, a color combination that is especially eye-catching in the spring. Its blooming period lasts from late fall to early summer, and the yellow flowers are very attractive to bees and butterflies, bringing life and vitality to your garden.
đ Care Tips:
Light Requirements:
Brittlebush needs plenty of sunlight to support its growth and blooming. Ensure the plant receives direct sunlight, although some shading is acceptable, especially during hot summer afternoons.
Temperature Adaptation:
Brittlebush is well adapted to the Bay Area climate, growing in winter and going dormant in summer. Its ability to thrive in a Mediterranean climate makes it an ideal choice for local gardens.
Water and Fertilizer Management:
Brittlebush's drought resistance means it requires very little water, a big plus for Bay Area residents who are conscious of water conservation. It generally grows well with natural rainfall, needing only occasional watering in extremely dry conditions. Additionally, Brittlebush has low fertilizer needs, and over-fertilization can affect its natural beauty.
Maintenance Requirements:
Brittlebush is very low-maintenance. Only prune when the plant is damaged by frost or when branches age, to encourage new growth. Keeping the soil loose and well-drained is also crucial to prevent root waterlogging.
âď¸ Special Bonus:
Common garden pests like hares and other small animals usually avoid Brittlebush, making it a natural pest-resistant plant!

Original Staging Design by Team Metric Inc : That warm feeling of Home. đą
Today, weâre showcasing another staging project by the interior designers at Team Metric Inc. With a modern interior style, the rooms appear more spacious and bright. The decorations on the tables perfectly complement the ambiance. Looking around, one can imagine countless possibilities for living in this beautiful space. đż
â¨Sophisticated Home Design: It's All in the Details
This is the staging project we completed last week in Oakland in just one day. By combining new furniture with upcycling our past inventory, we aimed to create a living space that blends modernity with a natural, lived-in feel for our clients.
-
In the bedroom, floral decorations, delicate ornaments, and soft lighting make the room feel warm and serene. The living room features bright yellow pillows and black-and-white art prints, adding a touch of style and warmth.
-
The sophistication of home decor lies entirely in the details. The layering of textures, the mix of materials, and meticulous attention to detail are what make this project stand out as an excellent work.

Preserving Elegance: The Storied Past and Timeless Beauty of former Robin Williams' house in San Francisco
The former San Francisco mansion of Robin Williams, located at 540 El Camino Del Mar, is up for sale at $25 million by Marsha Garces Williams, his ex-wife and longtime resident. This Sea Cliff home, designed by architect Earle B. Bertz in 1962, reflects the distinctive style of the San Francisco neighborhood. Originally built for the Olson family, known for their lumber and shipping business, the property spans 17,149 square feet and offers an unobstructed view of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge.
After the Williamses acquired the home in the 1990s, they extensively renovated it while preserving Bertz's original design. The current 10,598-square-foot luxury villa maintains both classic and modern elements, including marble and stone facades, intricate woodwork, and spacious rooms overlooking the sea. The property also includes a media room, office, gym, sauna, and a guest apartment. The mansion boasts a garden with a fire pit, cooking area, and stunning vistas of the bay and surrounding landscapes.

In mid September, the Bay Area encountered wildfire smoke impacts from fires going on in Northern California and Southern Oregon. National Weather Service warned that the poor air quality is unhealthy and advised residents to avoid exposure and stay indoors.
In the realm of residential architecture and design, ensuring proper ventilation is paramount for maintaining indoor air quality, comfort, and energy efficiency. Two primary approaches to achieving this goal are passive and active ventilation systems. These systems differ significantly in their operation, mechanisms, and energy requirements.
Passive ventilation systems are fundamentally reliant on natural forces, such as wind and thermal buoyancy, to circulate air within a home. These systems harness the principles of physics and the inherent characteristics of the building's design to facilitate airflow.
1. Design-Centric: Passive ventilation relies heavily on architectural features like strategically placed windows, vents, and openings. The design of the house is tailored to take advantage of prevailing wind patterns and the stack effect, wherein warm air rises and exits through high vents while cool air enters through lower openings.
2. Energy-Efficient: Passive systems consume little to no external energy, making them highly sustainable and cost-effective. They rely on the natural environment and temperature differentials to drive airflow.
3. Simplicity: Passive systems are often simpler to install and maintain since they don't require mechanical components like fans or motors. They tend to be more resilient and have fewer points of failure.
Active ventilation systems, on the other hand, employ mechanical components, such as fans or blowers, to actively circulate air throughout the house. These systems are designed to offer greater control and efficiency but come with their own set of characteristics
1. Energy-Dependent: Active ventilation systems rely on electricity to power fans or blowers. While they can be highly efficient when used judiciously, they contribute to energy consumption and may increase utility costs.
2. Precise Control: Homeowners have greater control over the airflow and air quality with active systems. They can adjust settings based on specific needs, such as increasing ventilation during cooking or reducing humidity in bathrooms.
3. Installation and Maintenance: Active systems require professional installation and periodic maintenance to ensure they function optimally. Components like motors and filters may need replacement over time.
In conclusion, passive and active ventilation systems represent distinct approaches to achieving adequate indoor air quality in residential homes. Passive systems harness natural forces and architectural design to promote airflow without relying on external energy sources, offering simplicity and sustainability. In contrast, active systems employ mechanical components for precise control over ventilation but are energy-dependent and require ongoing maintenance.
The choice between these two approaches ultimately depends on factors such as energy efficiency goals, budget considerations, and the specific needs of the household. Some homeowners opt for hybrid systems that combine elements of both passive and active ventilation to strike a balance between energy conservation and control. Regardless of the chosen method, proper ventilation is essential for maintaining a healthy and comfortable living environment in any residential house.

Armature.
People usually think the structure is the most important part of architecture. It creates a shelter and offers a spatial feeling. It is so exciting to imagine all kinds of stories that happened in between these structural members.
